The Time a 73 Year Old Aretha Franklin Brought Down the House at the Kennedy Center
On December 6th, 2015, the Queen of Soul performed an iconic rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” in tribute to the song’s co-writer, Carole King, who was receiving the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime achievement alongside Rita Moreno, Cicely Tyson and other luminaries.
King, who is the most successful female songwriter of the latter half of the 20th century in the US—having written or co-written 118 pop hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999—is the one standing in awe and jubilation beside Michelle Obama.
There’s a fantastic ‘oral history’ of the unforgettable evening by The New York Times, and if you want to learn more about the legendary Franklin, you can start with this remembrance piece on NBC News.
