Artist Uses Machine Learning to Upscale a Vintage Video from 1896 to 4K 60fps

Using publicly available machine learning algorithms, Denis Shiryaev was able to upscale a vintage video from 1896 to 4K 60fps quality. While the results are not perfect, it’s remarkable this technology exists and is accessible to the general public.

To achieve this, Shiryaev used Topaz Labs’ Gigapixel AI to upscale the source footage to 4K, and used DAIN to add non-existent frames in-between original frames to make it 60fps.

The original footage is entitled, L’arrivée d’un train à La Ciotat (The Arrival of a Train), and was shot in 1896 by Louis and Auguste Lumière. The quality for the time is astonishing and you can see the original video embedded below.
