Weddings often come with small but important decisions.
The following story involves a woman who was getting married soon. Her 6-year-old niece would be the flower girl.
She told the little girl she would get light-up sunglasses at the reception, but the girl insisted on wearing them while tossing flowers.
Things escalated when the child’s mother stepped in and questioned whether she’d even participate.
Whoa! Who knew kiddie sunglasses could cause wedding drama? Read the full story below for all the details.
AITA for telling my niece that she can’t have the sunglasses until later?
I (27F) am getting married soon. My niece “Maddie” (6F) will be our flower girl.
My partner and I babysit Maddie regularly.
So she has been seeing a lot of the wedding prep and loves to be our “helper” whenever she is here.
One of the things we have for the reception is heart-shaped sunglasses that light up.
Maddie was excited to receive and use the sunglasses.
Maddie is quite fascinated by them. She has been talking about how she is going to be a “cool girl.”
And that she will wear them when she “throws the flowers.”
I told her that she will have them at the “party part” (reception).
But she does not need them during the ceremony or the photos.
She keeps arguing with me about it. I keep repeating what I said before.
This woman received a message from Maddie’s mom telling her Maddie’s feelings were hurt.
Last night, my SIL sent me a FB message, saying that I am hurting Maddie’s feelings.
I said that I am not trying to hurt her feelings, but this is a decision I have made.
She will still get to wear them later.
SIL said that she “does not know if Maddie will want to be the flower girl without them.”
AITA for telling my niece that she cannot have the sunglasses until later?
Uh oh! Yes, six-year-olds tend to get attached to something fun like light-up sunglasses.
But even though the girl felt hurt and insisted on having it during the ceremony, it’s OP’s wedding.
Wanting a certain look for the ceremony is completely reasonable.
Letting her wear them at the reception feels like a fair compromise without ruining the moment.
Let’s find out what others have to say about this.
