Well, this sounds pretty unpleasant

If you’ve ever had to deal with a neighbor who was constantly in your business and tried to be your one and only best friend forever and ever, well, then you already know how annoying that is.

If you haven’t ever been in that situation, let me tell ya: it sucks!

You feel like you’re trapped in your living room because you’re afraid to go outside and run into the neighbor from hell.

Take a look at what the woman who wrote this story is dealing with, and see what you think.

How do I get my neighbour to leave me alone?

“I (33f) rent the basement suite of a townhouse in a big Canadian city.

The upstairs tenant (~40f) has annoyed me since we first met when I moved in.

I can tell very quickly when I meet someone if I will click with them/if I want to spend time with them. I immediately knew we did not click as she came off as a busy body/gossip, but she asked for my number for emergencies and I reluctantly gave it to her.

To be clear we are not roommates and I have my own separate entrance, laundry etc.. I am an introvert who loves my home alone time and I do not have an interest in socializing with neighbours beyond friendly waves etc.

Her neighbor sounds overly friendly.

She immediately started texting me regularly asking if she could pick me up anything from the store, commenting that she can hear me coughing and asking if I need cold medicine, asking if she should adjust the thermostat even though I repeatedly told her I was fine.

Little things but enough to irritate me, because are you passive aggressively trying to tell me to cough quieter? Sometimes she even calls me when I have do not disturb on and she’s clicking notify anyway.

I politely decline and make no efforts to continue the conversation and it dies down, I think it’s been handled.

She answered her neighbor’s call late one night.

Fast forward a few months with minimal interaction and she FaceTimes me LATE on a Friday night…

I answer because I think it’s an emergency or something but it’s because she wants to show me the kittens she’s watching for a friend. Like an entire litter of 12 kittens in her house where we are not supposed to have pets, LOL.

But it’s late, I just got back from drinking with friends and am still tipsy and think it’ll be fun to go upstairs just to see the kittens.

As we’re chit chatting about the kittens, her language is CRUDE.

This was starting to get weird…

I have a potty mouth but this was a whole other level as she told me some of the misogynist nicknames her male friend gave the barn cat and kittens, and I immediately regret going up.

It becomes clear within a few minutes that I am there because she needs extra hands to clean and set up new crates for them, etc. It’s also a very convenient way for her to trap me into feeding and checking on the kittens when she’s away next week.

She knows I’m home because it’s the summer and I’m a teacher and I’m too tipsy to get out of it, but I figure I can deal with it. Prior to her going away she’s bringing me garden veggies, leftovers and trying to hang out.

I dodge her as much as I can.

Maybe she thinks they’re friends?

This woman texts me nonstop the whole three days I agreed to feed the kittens. About where she is on her road trip, the weather, asking for pics of the kittens and what not.

She also keeps telling me I need to pick out a kitten of my own even though I said I wasn’t interested.

I vow to never do a favor for her again and to find a way to restore my peace and quiet.

I also have a pretty noticeable allergic reaction to the kittens and let her know I cannot help with them again.

The kittens didn’t stay very long.

It ends up being too much work (DUH) for her to keep taking care of the kittens and she drives them back to her friends farm, texting me the drive there saying how devastated she is that she couldn’t take care of them.

I do not reply because I do not care and am so ready for her to get the hint that I don’t want a friendship with her.

And for a while I think she gets the message!

Things changed for the better for awhile.

She tries to offer me food and things occasionally, but Im either not home or find a way to decline.

It seems that we are just neighbours again, and minus her being loud occasionally things are good.

For many months I didn’t hear her and learned from her son in his 20s that she’s mostly at her boyfriend’s house.

Things are GREAT…until they aren’t.

What a pain in the neck this lady is…

About two months ago it was evident that she had moved home as it became loud again.

I start to see her sitting outside a lot more often but am typically in a hurry so have just been giving waves and nods.

But about two weeks ago as I was genuinely rushing to my car she SCREAMED at me from the front porch that it would be nice to talk to her neighbour once in a while.

I let her know that I am running late and she immediately apologizes and even looks embarrassed.

The neighbor needs another favor.

But she calls me that evening and for some stupid reason I answer.

She’s saying we need to catch up and she’s rambling on about absolute garbage, how she’s so sorry if she’s been too loud, if the garbages have been too full, would I like to buy coffee protein drinks from her because she ordered a flavor she doesn’t like blah blah blah.

I’m trying so hard to shut down the conversation or figure out why she’s calling.

Well she’s calling because she’s going to be dog sitting and she wants to make sure I won’t rat to the landlord.

This sounds like blackmail.

This is where things get interesting, as she slips onto the conversation that she’s aware that I occasionally smoke weed in the garage.

It is MY detached single garage and I’m very careful about the odor, I have an air purifier and am always using odor remover tools. Smoking is prohibited on the property but I know she and the neighbours on the other side of the townhouse do as well, so didn’t really think it was a big deal.

I may be overreacting here but the way she brought up the smoking in conjunction with asking that I don’t say anything about her dog sitting to the landlord feels…manipulative.

Like I don’t want to say blackmail but it’s giving blackmail! I love dogs though so just kinda say yeah all good and we get off the phone.

This just keeps getting worse…

Yesterday she brought the dog home and it was not a quiet dog like she claimed.

So far it’s running around and bumping into things, barking/yelping and they were awake VERY early this morning.

The poor dog was loud and I think alone for most of the day.

The neighbor is now demanding a favor.

When she got home from work today she started calling me, I don’t answer, she’s texting I’m not opening the texts. She starts knocking on my door, I turn the TV up louder (something I also attempted to do when I first moved in and she wasn’t getting the hint).

Finally I look at her texts a few hours later and the woman has the audacity to assume I’m gonna feed the dog when she’s at work.

Her exact text: “I have training on Tuesday and Wednesday next week and I’d really appreciate you feeding the dog and letting her out while I’m gone. My son was supposed to do it but he’s going away with his grandparents.”

Like….no questions like are you available? Would you mind doing me a favor? Just a straight up assumption that i will be home and able to do this. And my anxious mind immediately goes if I don’t feed this dog I’m getting blackmailed for smoking weed.

It’s time to cut this woman off!

I sent a very short reply: “Sorry just saw this now. I can’t, I’m back at work next week and not available.”

I am technically not back at work till the week after but I will absolutely be preparing for work so don’t really feel like I’m lying, and at this point I don’t care if I am.

But where do I go from here?

I can’t sleep and I’m typing out this insane post because she’s kinda freaking me out at this point.

Should I just tell the landlord and beg him not to say I’m the one who told him there’s a dog at the house?”

Is this lady over the top, or what?

You can say that again!

Good grief! This is ridiculous!

This woman’s neighbor is simply too much!
