Buying your first home as a couple is an important and special milestone.

In this story, a woman and her fiancé are getting their first house as a couple soon.

His mother casually asked when they would give her the key to the house.

She told her future mother-in-law that they wouldn’t give her a key.

They went back and forth about it, and it eventually turned into a huge family drama.

Check out the full details below.

AITAH for telling my fiancé’s mom she can’t have a key to our new house?

We are getting into our first house together next month, and I have to admit that I am very excited about it.

Dan, my fiancé, who is 29M, and I have been saving for this house for three years already.

Last weekend during our dinner, Dan’s mom nonchalantly asked us when we would give her a spare key “in case of emergencies.”

I told her that we did not think about giving keys to any of our families yet, no offense meant to anyone.

This woman repeated that their decision wasn’t a personal matter.

Dan’s mom became silent.

Then, she said something along the lines of, “Well, I am his mother. I should also have one.”

I told her that it was not a personal matter.

But we wanted our home to be our home and nobody to enter without announcement, family included.

She has already done it at Dan’s last apartment, entering with an excuse of bringing food when we were obviously busy.

Her fiancé accused her of humiliating his mom.

Dan wasn’t saying much during the dinner.

But later that day, he told me that I embarrassed his mom in front of the whole family.

And that I should’ve addressed the issue without embarrassing her at the dinner table.

I told him that I haven’t done anything to embarrass her. I simply gave an honest answer.

And if it was his decision to give her a key behind my back, we need to talk about it because the house is ours, too.

Even his sister demanded that she apologize to their mom.

Now, he says that I’m being controlling and that “it’s just a key.”

I think it is about setting boundaries as a first-time homeowner.

Dan’s sister messaged me today telling me that I humiliated her and I need to apologize to their mom.

AITA for refusing to give the key at the dinner table instead of talking about it privately?

Uh oh! This sounds like a tough spot to be in.

Technically, OP was just being honest when she told her fiancé’s family that they don’t plan to give out house keys.

However, discussing it privately with Dan’s mom might have avoided some unnecessary family drama.

Especially since Dan clearly had different expectations about the key.

Let’s see how others reacted to this story.

She embarrassed herself, says this one.
