A Homeowner Was Already Fed Up With His Neighbor’s Property — Then Their Adult Son Moved Into A Camper In The Driveway

Generally, you can only put up with a bad neighbor for so long before you finally reach your limit.
Today, we meet a homeowner who’s at that point with the condition of their neighbor’s property.
The yard is overgrown, dead trees are leaning toward nearby homes, and piles of wood have taken over much of the space.
Now, to make matters worse, the neighbor’s adult son has moved into a camper in the driveway and is living there full time.
However, since that apparently violates local zoning rules, the homeowner is wondering whether it’s finally time to say something.

Living in Driveway
I have a neighbor who doesn’t bother to maintain their house or yard.
They refuse to mow their lawn. They have dead trees that are leaning over nearby properties that they refuse to cut down.
They also have invasive trees and ivy all over their yard that they refuse to do anything about. They collect pallets and wood for “future projects,” and these items are all over their yard.
As if the state of their home isn’t bad enough, now their son lives in the driveway.
We have fairly close lots in town, and recently, the tipping point is that they allowed their adult son to move into their driveway with his camper.
He now lives full-time in the camper, which is a zoning violation in our town.
They are reasonably nice people, and I don’t want to ruin our relationship and make things worse, but I’m not sure how to approach this to maintain my sanity. Any advice?

At this point, the condition of that property is creating problems that go well beyond one messy yard.
As others pointed out, the dead trees and other hazards could easily affect the surrounding neighbors as well.
And though they may be nice people, that doesn’t mean everyone else has to ignore a situation that could become dangerous.
