Telling a roommate that you don’t want to live with them anymore is like breaking up with someone you’re dating.

That might sound a bit dramatic if you’ve never been in that situation before, but trust me, it can be incredibly uncomfortable, and you have to decide whether you’re gonna tell this person the real reason you don’t want to see them every day or if you’re going to make something up to be nice.

It’s a tough call!

The guy who wrote this story is having an internal debate about how he wants to proceed with telling his roommate that he wants him gone.

Read on, and see what you think.

Should I be honest with my roommate about why I want them to move out, or keep it vague to avoid conflict?

“I’m the person on the lease for my apartment, and I rented out one of the rooms to someone with a written roommate agreement.

When they first moved in, everything seemed great. They were respectful, easy to live with, and there were no issues.

After the first month, things started changing and I realized that our habits and expectations around sharing a living space are very different.

Yikes…

There have been several things that have made me feel uncomfortable in my own home, and I’ve reached the point where I don’t want to continue living together.

Our agreement allows me to end the arrangement with 30 days’ notice, and I’m planning to give them notice.

My question is: should I explain the real reasons why I’m ending the roommate arrangement, or is it better to keep it simple and say something like “I don’t think we’re the right fit as roommates”?

This might be an uncomfortable conversation…

Part of me feels like they should know why, but I also don’t want to create tension during their last month here.

I’m worried that if I list every issue, they might become defensive and make the remaining time uncomfortable.

For people who have had to ask a roommate to leave, what approach worked best?

Did you tell them the full truth, or did you keep it neutral to maintain peace until they moved out?”
