Her New Neighbors Repeatedly Tripped the Shared Smoke Alarm with Their Air Fryer—Then Left It Screaming for Over an Hour While Away

Sometimes, the problem with shared living spaces is that someone else’s habits become your problem too.

One woman started dealing with that after new neighbors moved into the other half of the house she shares.

Because both units are connected to the same smoke alarm system, every time they set theirs off, hers goes off too.

At first, it was just annoying, but then it started happening almost every day at random times.

Now, the alarms are interrupting her work from home, and one night they went off for more than an hour because of an air fryer.

Read on to see what you think she should do.

Our new neighbors set off our smoke detector almost daily, what do?

My boyfriend and I have been living in our apartment now for almost 3 years. It’s an old house that’s split into two units (front house & back), each with their own separate entrances. However, our fire alarms are connected, so if one is set off, the whole house hears it.

In the years we’ve lived here, the fire alarm has gone off randomly before, like when one of our neighbors decided to fry chicken in the middle of the night.

He profusely apologized the next day, and thankfully, we never had any issues again. Then some students lived there, and similarly, they only set it off once or twice and apologized for doing so.

The new neighbors set the alarm off way more often.

But now we have new neighbors. And this **** alarm is going off every. single. day.

When they first moved in about 2 months ago, our elderly dog was essentially in hospice, and it would send her into a panic. Admittedly, I am probably holding onto a bit more anger in this situation because it caused my old girl stress in her final days.

There is no rhyme or reason to the alarm going off. It goes off mid-day (like it did just a few moments ago as I’m writing this), and I often work from home, so this is becoming a disturbance to my professional life.

Then, it started going off and didn’t stop.

Last night, however, it went off consistently for over an hour, starting around 8 PM. At 9, I had had enough and decided to investigate, mainly to make sure it wasn’t a REAL fire.

I didn’t expect the neighbors to be out on their porch (there are 3 or 4 people living in the front house), so they saw me when I came to check things out. When I asked if there was an emergency, they said no, it’s from the air fryer.

I asked them to please be more considerate, as my boyfriend has to be up for work at 5 AM and typically goes to bed around 9.

But my main question is—should air fryers normally cause that much smoke? We don’t use one, but in my limited experience with them, doesn’t smoke usually mean they need to clean it? I don’t want to escalate this too much, but it is starting to cause a lot of anxiety for me, so we need a solution.

Yikes! No one wants to deal with that everyday.

Let’s see what the people over at Reddit think she should do.

Which is probably why they were all outside.

They should probably call the landlord though.

Here’s a good suggestion.

This person has no idea.

Those neighbors need to figure something out.

If the air fryer is setting off the smoke alarm that often, something is clearly wrong.

At this point, she already asked them nicely, so if it keeps happening, she needs to contact the landlord.

Nobody should have to deal with that every day just because the neighbors can’t figure out what’s causing it.
