Dad Threatens Boarding School During Lockdowns, but His Wife Says He’s Gone Too Far

The COVID Pandemic was a difficult time for many people, and students in school at this time had an especially hard time.
What would you do if your daughter was going to school from home, but she wasn’t putting any effort into it, she wasn’t showering, and she wouldn’t do her chores?
That is what the father in this story was dealing with, so out of frustration, he threatened to send her to boarding school, but his wife said that he crossed a line.
Personally, I think he should not have said this, though he does need to get his daughter’s behavior under control. Read through the full story below and see what you think.
AITA for telling my daughter that I’ll send her to a boarding school if she continues to misbehave?
My daughter Richa (13) has always been quiet and well behaved.
Lots of kids had trouble during the COVID pandemic. This story took place during that time.
She never acted out, never threw any tantrums. But ever since this lockdown, it’s like she is a completely different person.
She refuses to wake up early, she wakes up at 7:50, 10 minutes before her classes start and just opens the laptop and switches on her classes while using her phone.
Yeah, she is being kind of extreme.
I told her to sit at her desk, act like she was actually in class but she refuses to listen. She doesn’t eat unless I bring the food to her room, or comes down angrily to grab food when I’m too busy to bring it to her room.
She threw a tantrum because I switched off the WiFi at 1 am and told her that she has to sleep, and when I put a parent lock on Netflix for things that are 18+. She won’t take bath unless I threaten to take her phone away, says she doesn’t need to since she’s only home and isn’t going out.
I think their response is pretty reasonable.
And she doesn’t do any of her alloted chores unless I ask her to do it ten times. Even then, she does it half heartedly and leaves them incomplete, forcing me to finish them.
Yesterday, I had enough. I told her that this situation is hard on everyone, she is not the only one who is suffering during this time. That her mom and I are beyond stressed and the least she can do is to do her chores properly and not treat us like a nuisance when we’re giving her everything she needs and asking for the bare minimum in return.
These parents seem to be doing everything they can.
She told me none of her friends do any chores, and that she’s being forced to sweep and mop when her friends aren’t. I said I didn’t care what they’re doing, she has to do the chores I’ve given her whether she likes it or not.
She refused. I asked her why she’s being like this, why she’s changed and if she needs a therapist to talk to, and she screamed that she’s not crazy like her mom so why would she need one. Her mom, my wife, gets therapy for PTSD.
I assume this is an empty threat, and he shouldn’t have made it.
I was beyond livid and told her that if she does not cut the attitude and does not do her chores to help out, I will send her to a strict boarding school in the middle of nowhere that will teach her responsibility, that will make her learn what it is like to have no one to pick up after you, no one to tolerate bad attitude and disrespect.
She won’t have phone, no TV, no Netflix, no gadgets of any kind and I will give her a small phone that can make calls and nothing else.
Yeah, maybe he shouldn’t have said that. But Richa does need to behave better.
She cried about this and locked herself in her room. My wife thinks I took it a bit too far, but I think Richa needs a reality check. But I also feel guilty.
AITA?
While he shouldn’t have threatened to send her to boarding school (unless he meant it, in which case he shouldn’t have said it out of anger), this daughter does need to start behaving better.
Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about this story.
A lot of this is just typical behavior for a 13-year-old.

He shouldn’t have threatened to send her to boarding school.

This commenter thinks the daughter is struggling with depression.

All parents have to stay on top of their kids to do chores.

His daughter is clearly struggling.

He may have crossed a line, but his daughter does need help. COVID was a very difficult time for everyone, and many kids really struggled. That seems to be the case with the daughter in this story.
It is not surprising that Dad lost his cool. He should apologize but then stress the fact that her behavior is not acceptable. Also, get her therapy or other professional help if possible.
