When someone tries to give you advice, you should always be polite about it, even if you don’t think that the advice is good. This is true whether you are an able-bodied person or someone in a wheelchair.

What would you do if you saw a parent in a wheelchair going down a path that led to a very muddy area, but when you gave her a polite warning about the difficulty ahead, she got upset about it and told you to mind your own business?

That is what happened to the soccer coach in this story, so when he finally arrived in the muddy area and saw the woman stuck in the mud begging for help, he just walked right by her. While his wife was upset that he didn’t stop to assist, he was happy that she got stuck simply because she refused to heed his warning.

Personally, I think this guy did things exactly right. If someone is rude when you offer them help once, why would you be willing to help them later? Read through the full story below, and see what you think of what happened.

Unpleasant soccer parent embarrasses my uncle, gets mired in petty.

My uncle was collecting chairs and water bottles on the sidelines after his daughter’s soccer game.

One of the mom’s from his team is a paraplegic, but also incredibly obnoxious.

My uncle sees her start to wheel across the field toward the parking lot, and mentions that it rained last night, and the field is pretty torn up in the middle.

She scoffs, and says in a very nasty, condescending voice, “I can’t walk, sir. Just because I don’t depend on others doesn’t mean I’m foolish. I know what I can and can’t take my chair through. Why don’t you just pay attention to whether you can roll that cooler through the mud.”

He has every reason to be upset about this.

My uncle is not apt to deal well with a public scolding, and this woman had just embarrassed him in front of all the other parents for trying to be nice.

When he tells it, he says his ears were hot and the litany of curses going through his head would, “shame [his] mother half to death.”

Then, an opportunity for sweet, sweet revenge presented itself.

She is really stuck now.

My uncle finished packing up his cooler, and was carrying it toward the parking lot, when he saw his new frenemy-on-wheels.

She was stuck pretty good in the mud, and she’d been trying to get out for a while, so she’d churned it up to where none of the tire or rim of her chair were visible.

Of course, now she wants his help.

My uncle changes his route slightly so that he’s walking right toward her with the smuggest grin on his face.

As he approaches, she turns around and sees that it’s him of all people who’s spotted her, and says “please resist the temptation to be a jerk about this. Just help me over to the side of the field.”

He gives her a big smile, then just as he passes her, without breaking stride, he responds, “you were foolish to have chosen this path.”

He caught attitude for it from his wife, but he never looked back, and to this day he says the sound of her cursing his name as she receded into the distance was like a choir of 1000 angels.

Rude people are awful, and that includes rude people with disabilities. This guy tried to be helpful at first and got yelled at for it, so why would he be there to assist later?

There is no reason to be rude to someone offering to help.

She got upset with him for offering to help, so why would he be willing to assist when she needed it? It doesn’t matter who you are; if you can’t be polite to people, you don’t deserve their help.

Hopefully there were other people who would come along to assist later. At the end of the day, however, she did this to herself.
