Some customers really know how to leave you thinking about a conversation long after they walk away.

One grocery store cashier had that happen after asking a woman whether she wanted her receipt.

Instead of simply saying no, the customer suddenly became concerned that the employee wasn’t wearing gloves.

Then, she warned that handling receipts could expose her to chemicals and even cause cancer.

Now, the cashier cannot stop thinking about what the woman said.

Reminded by the story of the tree killing cashier, I’m apparently at risk for cancer.

I was at a grocery store, so a lot of times people’s hands are full when they walk out. As such, I’d gotten into the habit of asking if they wanted the receipt. One lady didn’t.

Me: “Would you like your receipt?”

Lady: “Oh, no way. Wait… do they not give you gloves?”

Me: “No. It’s funny, a customer from down South once said—”

Then, the woman dropped a bombshell allegation.

Lady: “Oh my God, you better get some gloves. Those things are going to give you cancer.”

Me: “The receipt?”

Lady: “Yes! Do you know what kind of chemicals they put in those things? The ink will leach into your skin and cause all sorts of problems.”

With that, she left me at the register, staring dumbly at my hands and the receipt.

Eek! Regardless if it’s true or not, it’s still enough to make you wonder.

The woman may have caught the cashier off guard, but her concern about chemicals in receipts wasn’t completely random.

Either way, dropping a cancer warning on someone in the middle of a shift is a pretty intense way to bring it up.

If nothing else, though, she probably made that cashier think twice about how often she handles receipts.
