Rebranding the BP Logo: The 25 Funniest and Most Creative

As of June 1st, 2010, at least 20 million gallons (75.7 million liters) of oil has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. This has been a complete and utter disaster for BP in every sense. The timing, the location (i.e., it didn’t occur on the borders of a developing nation), it is all bad for BP right now. Everyone is chiming in and it won’t stop until the leak does.
Greenpeace UK has just launched a campaign/contest urging people to ‘rebrand’ the BP logo and show that they aren’t ‘Beyond Petroleum’ as their slogan suggests. While entries are open until the end of June there have already been over 300 to date! I’ve culled 25 of the more interesting submissions below. (see entire collection here)
THE ORIGINAL

From BP Corporate: Our visual identity reflects the revolutionary quality of our business.
Our logo was launched in 2000, and was designed as a dramatic break with tradition. It is unlike any other energy identity, and symbolises a number of things - from the living, organic form of a sunflower to the greatest source of energy…the sun itself.
The colours of the ‘Helios’ – named after the Greek god of the sun – suggest heat, light and nature. It is also a pattern of interlocking shapes: like BP, a single entity created by many different parts working as one. This was particularly relevant, as the new brand was launched after a series of mergers and acquisitions. It united all the heritage companies and employees that now make up BP and its global brand.

June 5th, 2010 at 7:07 amI really like these BP jokes, but I just find it strange that none of these oil spill jokes are directed towards the guys that was elected into political office to take care of incidents like this.
Every one was on Bush’s (not a fan) back about Katrina a natural disaster but no-one seems to care that Obama is doing NOTHING at least BP is trying(and spending) Obama is only talking and doing jack shit.
If you state it is BP’s fault you can also say it is the fault of the organisation that gave BP the right to drill there … US Government = Obama. He had more than a year to revoke BP’s license so don’t go blaming other administrations either. He had his chance to rectify any mistakes in licensing and did not see any fault in this license.

June 5th, 2010 at 12:54 pmI really think some of these are funny, but the whole thing is so sad. One of the best BP logo bashings I have seen is a BP "Bullshit Ear Protector" being sold on eCrater. It is really funny and the sellers will donate part of their profits to the National Wildlife Federation to help clean up the wildlife and their Gulf habitats. You can see it at: http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=8243650

Dude, go ahead and critize the government RESPONSE and the existing poor regulatory controls, but its just stupid to think that the president should have been reviewing the drilling practices (or mining practices, or whatever minutia people are pissed about at the moment) of every rig in the gulf and pulling licenses. Broad strategy is the president's job, not reviewing minutia. One can argue that the Minerals Management office really dropped the ball, and given the re-occuring malfeasance of the office (just look at the incredibly unethical relationships members had with oil and coal explorers in the western states at the tale end of the last administration) it needs some dramatic oversight and auditing, but even then, that isn't what the president should be focused on (the Secretary of the Interior, the GAO, the head of MM, all of them yes, but not the president).
In terms of response, everyone involved is lacking, and Obama really seems to only be focused on throwing manpower at the cleanup which is far to reactive for my tastes. Criticize that, but to have expected magic divining powers to recognize the problem before it happened is completely unreasonable. That said, I applaud the notion that BP should pay the whole bill - so many of the costs of oil and coal are externalized such that they are not reflected in pump prices and I am all for seeing those costs internalized so that we understand the true cost of a gallon of oil. Then alternatives wouldn't look so costly.

June 9th, 2010 at 4:07 pmYou have to be kidding, right?? This can be DIRECTLY connected to Cheney and his deregulation of the industry. Obama is cleaning up yet ANOTHER mess (Iraq, US economy, Afganistan) left to our country, our children, and our children's children that the last 8 years of Bush and his at-any-cost directives have left us. Give me a break.

June 13th, 2010 at 6:15 pmThe blame is with the company that built the faulty pressure release valve that didn't do its job and caused this, don't blame the government don't blame BP , blame the company that made the valve if you want to pinpoint the blame. If you really want to, blame US the people for using the product and not pushing the world harder for ways to become independent of the product, blame the government as a whole for regulating the oil industry better, and no need to Blame Obama for this directly but blame him anyway because he is useless, he makes nice speeches and is a very good speaker and all you suckers suck it up because of this but when it comes down to it, he is one of the worst presidents we have ever seen, stop letting his words and eloquent speaking fool you and instead look at his actions.

June 15th, 2010 at 12:12 pmIt's a catastrophe for sure, and nobody could blame the US for feeling aggrieved and for wanting to blame someone. But it's interesting to note that, in the case of an American company which was responsible for the Bhopal disaster in India (1984), where thousands of people died and many more are still dying today, they don't give a crap.

June 15th, 2010 at 5:02 pmO__o just because we drive cars doesn't mean we're all for shetty regulations of the industry. I tink you might be missing theh point silly troll.
SURE, lets just blame the whole human race. That's one way to make things better *sarcasm*. Bitter cynical like you make me sick. You are just as useless as those who you are condemning for creating the problem. I believe it is possible for us to use our innovations to correct these problems that we caused. But the blame game is easier to play. If you're going to get pissy, why not actually do something about it rather than posting a pathetic one liner to some forum that few people actually read?

June 16th, 2010 at 10:52 pmThe Indian Government put their own foots up their rumps on that one. The CEO got on a plane, jetted on over there to work on getting things cleaned up, and he was put on house arrest, and THEN told you have to get OUT of India within 24 hrs. So, he did. DUH. The company paid something like $500 million dollars towards that, and set up accounts for those directly affected. Sure, much more can be done, but you also have to blame the standards over there in India. I for one had to hold my nose going through that country it was damn filthy. Lets hope their standards are higher now.

June 19th, 2010 at 11:22 amChildish to blame one company - you think BP are the exception to the rule? All oil companies are like this and it's oil that drives our economies. The bleading heart fishermen (some…not all - of which are rubbing their hands together with glee at the payout they will receive) are happy to pour diesel into the engines that take their boats out to sea.
