Fraser Smith Made These Beautiful Quilts… Out of Wood
Trompe l’oeil is an art technique that uses extremely fine details that creates illusions (source). For example, Fraser Smith’s quilts are all made out of wood. That’s right: the pictures below may look like they’re made out of fabric, but they were carved out of wood!
What started as a childhood hobby has turned into a lifelong passion and transformed Smith into a master woodcarver. Using basswood, Fraser carves his artworks out of enormous blocks of glued wood; the finished products can weigh more than 60 pounds (source).
Working out of his backyard shop, the quilts take six to eight months on average to make, with the majority of that time spent sanding and painting (source).
