Imagine working retail, and it’s almost time for your lunch break. What would you do if your supervisor wanted you to complete one more task before you took your lunch break, but you knew the task would take awhile to complete?
In this story, one employee is in that exact situation, and they feel forced to comply. They almost get in trouble for it too.
Keep reading to see how the story plays out.
Screwing with my Supervisors mind
So I was working with my supervisor, who I honestly don’t like TO THIS DAY.
I was supposed to be going on lunch and had to wrap up a job with my supervisor.
I was about to go to the back and clock out for lunch before the wicked witch of the west I call my supervisor chimed in.
Wicked witch: hey wait, I need your help with this.
It looked like it would take awhile.
I looked towards her and saw her giving me this expectant look, and saw she wanted me to sort out a load of merchandise that got mixed up.
Me: “I’m sorry, but I got 2 minutes before my lunch starts, so can it wait until after?”
Wicked Witch just gave me a look as if I had just insulted her.
Wicked Witch: “it needs to be done now, you can go on lunch after”
OP almost got in trouble for complying.
On the inside I was mad, because if we work 20 minutes or more into our scheduled lunch break time, we get in trouble for it.
I sorted things out, and when one of the managers (we’ll call him cool guy) saw me punch out for lunch at like 25 minutes after my designated lunch break started.
Cool guy: hey LuckyGlitchy, why are you punching out late? You know there’s a penalty for that.
I proceeded to tell him how the wicked witch said I had to wait until after I finished the job she gave me, and wouldn’t let me talk my way out until after, so I complied, unwillingly of course.
This guy does sound like a cool guy.
Cool guy: Ok, due to the circumstances I won’t write you up for it.
I was RELIEVED that I didn’t get in trouble for it, and when I was on lunch, my supervisor approached glaring daggers at me, leaning over the other half of the table looking right at me.
I looked back with full attention eye contact and unphased,
Me: “Hi”
I said that, looking at her before taking a bite out of my sandwich, NEVER breaking eye contact
Apparently, the supervisor wanted OP to lie.
Wicked Witch: Why did you tell cool guy I kept you from lunch?
Me: because you did, was I not supposed to?
Wicked Witch: I got chewed out for it, why would you do that to me?
Me: because my clean record from write ups was in jeopardy, also was I supposed to just lie?
Wicked Witch: I just fail to understand why you would do that.
It’s always best to tell the truth.
Me: Simple, I either lie, which I rather not, or tell the truth.
Wicked Witch: It doesn’t look good for the supervisor to get in trouble.
Me: Maybe you shoulda thought about that before accepting the position.
She would not talk to me for quite awhile after that.
What a horrible supervisor. I’m glad the manager is a cool guy.
Let’s see how Reddit responded to this story.
Yes, she did.

This person would’ve responded slightly differently.

I hope so!

Here’s more praise!

The manager is the real hero.
