He Sent One Text to Save Local Wildlife—And Turned the Neighborhood Chat Into a Battlefield

Doesn’t it really grind your gears when you try to make what you think is a helpful suggestion and it backfires in a major way?
It’s the worst!
And then you feel self-conscious because you thought you were doing a good deed…but other folks didn’t quite see it that way.
I’m assuming that’s how this person feels. They explain how a suggestion they made in a neighborhood text thread didn’t go so well.
Take a look at what they had to say.
Neighbors are all idiots.
“A neighborhood cat is outdoors a lot and yesterday I saw her catch and kill a chipmunk.
I suggested a hunting-safe collar in the neighborhood group chat.
I know people can tend to be defensive about their pets, so I tried to put it as gently as possible.
That didn’t go very well…
But the neighbors seemed to take up arms against me in the chat, are they all morons or am I a jerk?
Here’s the conversation:
Me: “Just a heads up – I saw the black cat get a chipmunk yesterday. If it’s yours, it may be worth considering a bird-safe collar or something to reduce hunting.”
Neighbor 1: “Could be B, my cat. There is also another black cat wandering neighborhood. Bird safe collar? Not familiar with it. “
They were trying to be nice about it…
Me: (includes web link) “Some of them look silly, LOL, but are meant to reduce hunting. B is very cute by the way “
Neighbor 2: “Cats are hunters by nature. But they are also prey for larger animals. Food chain. ✌️” (This gets thumb’sd up)
Me: “Of course they are. They also are an invasive species in the US and cause ecological issues”
Neighbor 1: “I am not going to use this thread to talk about my cat B. If anyone has a problem with her, reach out to me individually. I took her in 3 years ago when she was found in this neighborhood. I don’t want her killing any animals or birds. But at same time, she is not feral and is part of my family” (This gets several thumbs up in support)
Me: “Just sharing some information in case anyone is not aware. Nobody has a problem with B.””

And this person weighed in.

Well, they tried to be helpful…
But you just can’t please some people!
I have a feeling they’ll be keeping their mouth shut after this.
Well, this conversation didn’t go as planned…
