“I Still Cringe Years Later!”: College Student’s Grocery Slip-Up Turns Into Enduring Embarrassment

When you’ve got too much on your mind, sometimes you hear something completely different from what someone actually said.
One guy learned that after stopping at an office supply store while stressing over everything he needed to do before college.
Once he reached the register, his mind was somewhere else entirely.
So, when the cashier asked if he was having a good day, he thought he’d asked whether he needed anything else and quickly said, “No.”
A few seconds later, he realized his mistake and tried to explain.
Read on to see what he did next.
That one time a cashier asked if I was having a good day and I straight up said “No.”
I had just recently graduated high school some years back. Getting all my paperwork, payments, and getting ready for college was stressing me out.
On a particularly stressful day, I had to go get some paper, binders, etc., and I headed to the nearest office supplies store.
I had so many things on my mind and was completely distracted.
At first, he didn’t realize what the cashier asked.
I was in line to buy my stuff, and when I finally arrived at the cashier, he asked, “Are you having a good day today?”
To which my fried brain thought he had said, “Would you like anything else today?” So my reply was a very dry and quick, “No.”
In the corner of my eye, I saw he had made a surprised face, like, “Oh.”
When he discovered what happened, he tried to fix the situation.
Five seconds after that, I finally registered what had happened. I quickly tried to repair the small damage, “Uh, I’m sorry, did you ask if I was having a good day?”
He nods.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t even realize what you said. I’m so sorry. I’m stressed over college and stuff and wasn’t paying attention.”
He laughed a little and said he understood. But I was already embarrassed beyond repair. I felt I had been so rude, and once I was done, I thanked him and booked it.
Wow! That’s actually kinda funny, though.
Let’s see if the folks over at Reddit have done anything similar.
This person got an earful one time.

According to this comment, they’ve been on both sides of it.

That would make it awkward.

Here’s a former cashier who would’ve liked his honesty.

This is one of those moments that probably felt way worse to him than it actually was.
The cashier clearly understood once he explained, so there really wasn’t anything to be embarrassed about.
Still, it’s funny how your brain can drag up something like this years later and make you cringe all over again.
Hopefully, he can finally let this one go.
