“Earlier this year, my friend and I planned a trip to Italy for November.
It eventually became a birthday trip for my friend and her mom because their birthdays are that week.
My friend’s mom knows a travel advisor, and she worked with us to build the itinerary, book accommodations, and put together one group travel plan.
Originally it was going to be my friend, her mom, and me. Later, my mom was invited to join after my parents decided the trip was affordable. The travel advisor updated everything to include my mom.
This was getting to be a crowded trip…
Recently, my aunt started saying she really wanted to go. I told her this was my friend and her mom’s birthday trip, so I didn’t think it was appropriate to just join.
The next day, my mom texted me asking for my friend’s mom’s full name. I didn’t know why, so I told her.
Later I found out my aunt had decided to call the travel advisor herself to try to get added to our travel plan without asking my friend or her mom first.
She thought this was pretty rude.
This bothered me for two reasons:
– This is my friend and her mom’s birthday trip, and they’ve already planned an itinerary around what they want to do.
– Adding another person to the group booking could increase the overall cost. My friend’s mom had already expressed that the current price was close to her budget, and she was worried that if the total increased much more, she might not be able to afford her own birthday trip.
This is so inappropriate!
Because of that, I told my friend’s mom that my aunt was trying to add herself.
She appreciated knowing, but it also stressed her out because she became worried about the price changing.
My mom is now upset with me. She says I embarrassed her by telling my friend’s mom and that I should have just let my aunt contact the travel advisor. She also thinks I was rude for objecting to my aunt coming.
There’s another reason she doesn’t want her aunt to go on the trip.
For additional context, my mom even said my aunt would probably “show us so much more of Italy,” which is part of why I was uncomfortable.
We already have an itinerary, and I was worried the trip would end up revolving around what my aunt wanted instead of the birthday plans my friend and her mom made.
