Jeez, talk about a rude awakening… The restaurant and bar industry is a tough one, and a lot of places don’t make it, but this is no way to treat employees! A teenager who was working his first job wrote the story below, and he explained how he got blindsided with some shocking news…

And he most definitely wasn’t given a heads-up.

My job ‘no call, no showed’ me.

“I (18) got my first ‘proper’ job in hospitality a year ago.

Before this I had only worked seasonal positions so this job has been my first stable income. I was among the first staff hired when a new owner took over a local pub, so it was great to watch us build a little team.

The job has been great up until around a month ago when the owner purchased a new pub around 1.5 hours away from my workplace. He took our head chef and general manager with him, and occasionally, other chefs.

This was sort of done in secret.

This is a lot to ask of your employees…

We were not allowed to really talk about the new pub and any information anybody found out had to be kept away from management so that they weren’t aware we knew.

The owner kept showing up and taking things that we used- first the nice plates, a kitchen bin, straw holders. Then he came on a Sunday morning and took all of the Sunday roast prep that our remaining chef had done the night before.

I have reason to believe he also took spare kegs of beer as we started running out of stock quicker than usual. The outside bins stopped getting emptied, we stopped getting deliveries, rotations were coming out late, and everyone was struggling to keep the place alive.

As the rotation stated, I was to be in 11 am-8 pm, so I arrived at the back door around 10:30 am to it being locked (I am always early due to bus schedules so didn’t think this strange).

The bins- which as I said previously had not been emptied in weeks- had been moved so I messaged a colleague wondering what was going on with them. His reply was ‘We’re not open today, I swear’…

What was going on here…?

Which was weird? I wasn’t told about this.

Then I got a call from my manager. She said the same: ‘We’re not open today, I’ll have the owner call you later’.

Right on time I get a notification from my workplace Facebook page: We’re closing our doors.

What?

So I make the journey back home stunned. As of right now (10:30 pm) I still have not received a call from the owner.

Pay day was supposed to be in 2 days.
