Imagine being a dog owner and a home owner. Would you take your dog for a walk around your neighborhood, or would you keep your dog confined to your yard when it’s outside?

In this story, one man is in this situation, and like any normal dog owner, he thinks it’s perfectly normal to put his dogs on leashes and take them for a walk. Unfortunately, two of his neighbors really seem to hate that he walks his dogs.

I think the neighbors sound pretty crazy.

Neighbors Making Neighborhood Unbearable

My family and I moved to a new city last year.

We were renting in a neighborhood that is still under construction and loved the community so much we decided to purchase a new home in the development.

However, this may have been a mistake.

While our old neighbors are great friends and have kids our age, the people in the new part of the development are not as friendly.

It doesn’t seem like they’re doing anything wrong.

We have two dogs (both 12 year old beagle mixes). We routinely walk them at least twice a day, generally 1 to 2 miles each time. It’s great family time and exercise.

We always keep our dogs in the public right of way, away from people’s yards.

Fortunately the development has a strip of grass between the sidewalk and road for dogs to relieve themselves. This is public property as I have confirmed with the county GIS and the Sheriff’s Department.

This neighbor sounds really annoying.

However, my actions are not enough for our new neighbors.

We live on a culdesac and the two property owners at the corner seem to dislike us and our dogs.

One neighbor on the western corner will record us with her cell phone whenever we walk by and actually called the police on us, claiming we had allowed our dogs into her flower beds (this is impossible with the length of leash we have).

She never speaks to us, but will record us routinely. She also installed additional security cameras that afford a view of the sidewalk commonly used by dog walkers.

Yikes! Another neighbor might be even worse.

Her neighbor across the street has taken a more direct approach.

Yesterday she stopped us in the middle of the road and made a big scene about my 30 pound geriatric dog being properly restrained. Then she proceeded to tell me I need to keep my dogs out of her yard.

I explained that the dogs are kept on public property and asked if she had any evidence of my dogs being on her yard.

She then said that I shouldn’t even walk my dogs and should keep them in my yard. She also called me a terrible person in front of my wife and kids and made several veiled threats about making her mad being “bad”.

He knows he’s not doing anything wrong.

These threats were reported to the authorities.

I have no plans to change my actions, I even told her that I have confirmed with the local authorities that I am acting in accordance with our county’s regulations.

I further advised her to consult the property Plat that she should have received upon closing her home loan to delineate her property.

Her husband is an ex marine or something along those lines so I fully expect him to confront me in the near future.

I can’t imagine telling a neighbor not to walk their dogs. It’s a public sidewalk and public property. The neighbors need to back off!

I don’t think I’d bother dressing my dogs up in obnoxious costumes just to annoy the neighbors. Ignoring them is probably the best approach. If they’re really annoying and it’s possible, it might be less stressful to start walking the dogs a different direction, but in that case, the neighbors kind of win.

The neighbors clearly aren’t dog people.
