I’m 16F and my mom is 57F

My mom is older and doesn’t really see the harm in AI, but I do not like it.

I do not use it. For context, it was my birthday last month.

She got me a mousepad, so I don’t make my desk look even worse.

I’ve been using the same desk since I was 8.

I don’t believe it has a future or will ever look “nice” again, so I don’t give a crap about it.

This teenage girl didn’t like the item that her mom purchased because the design was AI-generated.

She got me an ugly tan-looking fake leather one that I said I’d rather not use.

She was okay with that. She wasn’t hurt, but also wasn’t mad at me.

She ended up ordering another one that is clearly AI because she thought the picture looked more fun.

She thought I’d like it because it has more colors.

It’s like this weird Chinese palace-looking place with an anime girl looking at it, but it’s so clearly AI.

She told her mom she was grateful, but she didn’t want her to buy things like that anymore.

I tried to explain to my mom that I’m grateful she’s trying to buy stuff for me.

But I’d rather she just send me the listing and ask me if I want it rather than waste more money on stuff I wouldn’t use.

She was all, “I was trying to get one you’d want cause you like anime,” and was a bit upset about it.

I feel bad. I love my mom, but she doesn’t want to listen to me when I tell her to not use AI.

She repeatedly fed images of me and my siblings to make “funny” changes.

I asked her to stop so AI won’t use my face as training data, and she did stop.

Her mom bought her an AI phone case before, too.

She doesn’t really ask before buying me stuff.

She got me an AI phone case for my new phone because she was trying and thought I would like it.

But I also didn’t use it.

I also spent like four days painting and making my own phone case, so I wouldn’t have used it anyway.

Now, she feels bad and concerned that more AI junk will go to the landfills because of her.

I still felt bad because she tried, but it failed.

She said she’s gonna ask before buying stuff.

But I know she won’t, and more items will go to landfills because of me.

AI junk will show up at my home intended for me but will never be used because of my dislike towards AI.

I can totally understand OP’s point. She clearly doesn’t want AI-generated products.

Her mom should listen to her without getting offended, because she was simply trying to communicate what her preferences are.

At the same time, her mother seemed to be genuinely trying to buy things she thought her daughter would enjoy.

I guess clear and open communication can solve the problem between them.
