Neighbor’s Mysterious Midnight Hum Kept An Entire Block Awake, But One Tenant Couldn’t Figure Out Where It Was Coming From

Some neighbors you know by name, and some you only know by the strange sounds coming through the wall at midnight.
One homeowner found himself in the second category after a mysterious, low-frequency humming noise started disrupting his sleep almost every night, running for roughly 30 to 45 minutes at exactly the wrong hour.
The sound didn’t match anything obvious either, too long for a bedroom fan, too brief and irregular for a CPAP machine, and possibly, but not definitely, a washing machine cycling through its motions.
What made the situation even trickier was the neighbor himself, someone he’d lived beside for years without ever exchanging so much as a wave.
Now he’s stuck trying to figure out how to approach a total stranger about a noise complaint he can’t even properly explain.

Vibrations, oscillations, buzzing
I have a neighbor that for the most part is good, but recently there is a loud oscillating sound that comes on for about 45 minutes at midnight.
There is a low frequency hum, and sometimes it sounds like a washing machine or helicopter-like.
The tenant can’t figure out what’s making this perplexing noise.
I don’t think it’s a bedroom fan, because it’s on for 30-45 minutes. I don’t think it’s a washing machine, but I guess it could be, and I don’t think it’s a CPAP, because it is on very briefly and not throughout the night.
They turn to Reddit for help ID’ing it.
Any guesses what it could be? This person really keeps to themself, and I’ve lived next to them for years and never have even waved to each other.
I need to tell them it’s preventing everyone from sleeping, but can’t figure out what it is.
How mysterious.

There are all sorts of devices out there that could be responsible.

A mysterious midnight hum is annoying enough on its own, but doing detective work just to identify the noise before you can even complain about it takes the frustration to a whole new level.
Years of silent neighbor coexistence make this kind of confrontation feel bigger than it probably needs to be, especially when there’s no established relationship to soften the request.
Sleep deprivation doesn’t really care about social awkwardness though, and a polite knock on the door beats stewing in resentment every night at midnight.
But at the end of the day, whatever the sound turns out to be, a washing machine, some kind of appliance, or something entirely unexpected, it’s disrupting more than just one household’s rest.
Sometimes breaking years of neighborly silence starts with something as simple as asking someone to turn the volume down.
