The Kitchen Cleaned Itself Every Time Her Roommate Traveled—So She Set Up Timestamped Time-Lapse Audits to Prove It

Nothing tests a friendship quite like discovering someone’s willingness to gaslight you over unwashed dishes.
One roommate consistently denied leaving messes behind, claiming the overflowing sink and scattered crumbs must have belonged to literally anyone else in the house except her.
Her tenant started noticing an odd coincidence too, the kitchen stayed perfectly clean every single time that same roommate happened to travel out of town.
Fed up with circular arguments about who actually left what, she began documenting the kitchen with video, recording it clean after she used it and dirty whenever she came home to a mess she hadn’t made.
That’s how a basic household frustration slowly evolved into a full evidence-gathering mission.

Dealing with “But it’s just a small mess!”
The problem with roommates who consistently fail to wash dishes or clean the kitchen immediately after they have cooked is that they are often the ones to claim that the mess is not theirs, that the mysterious cup that has been in the sink for three days isn’t theirs, that the mess is just accumulative, or that they’re not the only ones who use the kitchen.
These roommates all follow a predictable pattern.
They rely on denial, a lack of accountability, even gaslighting in order to skirt the fact that they are the main problem and fail to clean up after themselves.
Sometimes they will have you thinking that the crumbs and food bits may even be yours, they don’t even use the garbage.
But it’s when these roommates are away that the real truth comes out.
Then, they are away for a few days, and the kitchen remains spotless and the garbage doesn’t overflow.
That’s why it’s typically better to just clean up your mess right away, even if it is seemingly small.
This fed-up renter shares one more piece of advice.
The “But it’s not mine/it’s a small mess!” games cannot begin if you make the point that you always clean up immediately after and even clean up messes after others.
Don’t be afraid to record your kitchen after you use it (when it’s clean) and before you use it (when you come home and it’s dirty, haven’t used it and it’s dirty, etc).
Bad roommates are the worst.
What did Reddit have to say about all this?
Depending on someone else to clean up your mess is just plain childish.

It’s almost like an anthropological experiment.

This commenter knows the sting of a bad roommate well.

Watching a kitchen magically stay clean whenever one roommate disappears for a few days tells you everything you need to know.
Playing dumb about a three-day-old cup only works until someone starts keeping receipts, and in this case, the tenant did — on video, which is pretty much the best evidence you can get.
It’s harder to get away with something once it’s caught in 4k.
