She Left Dinner Early After Getting Sick—Then Got Outraged When He Asked for Her Meal Money

Let me ask you a question…
If you pay for someone’s meal by default, would you ask them to reimburse you?
That’s kind of a tough one, huh?
And I guess it depends on the situation…
But in the story you’re about to read, a guy wants his friend to pay up for the meal he covered for her…and she’s not too happy about it.
Uh oh!
Get all the details below, and see if you think he’s out of line.
AITA for making my friend pay for dinner?
“Last week, four of my friends and I went out for dinner.
For context, we’re all in our early-mid 20s and went to the same school but were in different classes.
Three of them (we’ll call them A, B & C) regularly hang out with me in groups, but the girl (D) isn’t in the country often, is closer to me than the other guys and we mainly hang out 1-on-1.
Everything was fine at dinner at first.
After we had some drinks that I got for the five of us, we chose to head out for a dinner at a Chinese restaurant which is famous in our area and can get quite expensive.
We were all fairly tipsy (D was more than others) and it was D’s first time at this restaurant.
We all gave our choices on what to order and basically got a dish or two that each of us wanted.
Uh oh…
D ate too much and started feeling sick (not that she ate more than any of us did, just that she ate more than she could handle).
We went outside for a smoke while waiting for the check, and D called a taxi immediately as she felt unwell. She left before the check came, without even saying bye to A and B.
A covered her share of the bill since she just left and I’d already run through my budget paying for drinks, my own share of dinner (which did cost more than we expected) and covering C as he and I discussed prior.
Also because D’s bday is this weekend and she’s leaving the country, so I was saving to get her a gift and take her out.
Now what…?
It’s been a few days and A asked me to tell D to send him her share of the dinner, as like I said the others aren’t as close to her.
When I told her about it, she got MAD.
She went on about how unchivalrous it is to ask the only girl in the group to pay and how anywhere else in the world this would be utterly shameful and “unmanly” (we live in Asia, she’s from Europe).
I explained to her that she’s not as close to them as she is to me and that it wasn’t really fair to assume how they’d feel or expect everyone to cover her without having a conversation about it beforehand (for more context, everyone in a group being expected to pay for their share regardless of gender is just a common way of doing things here, of course unless you’re taking a girl out on a date or something).
This was pretty presumptuous…
I also said that I would have covered her share personally but that I couldn’t afford to both cover her and take her out on her birthday treat (she knows the tough financial situation I’ve been lately).
She then said she doesn’t even want to do the birthday lunch anymore and that she really doesn’t care about it at all after this whole incident.
AITA for not paying for her share myself?
Is D being a jerk? Or is my friend A a jerk?
He feels pretty confused.
I don’t understand where the anger towards me is coming from, but given D’s comments I would appreciate a more “global” perspective on this.
It’s also worth knowing there haven’t been any instances like this with D before, so this is very surprising to me?
She is normally incredibly appreciative towards me, and she has never spoken to me like she did yesterday.”
