Siblings can be cruel to each other, and that doesn’t always stop once you are grown up.

What would you do if your brother stole your water bottle and brought it to camp, and when you called him out on it, he just laughed and said that it was getting ruined? To make matters worse, when you told your mom, she basically said to get over it and that she would buy you a new one.

That is what happened to the young woman in this story, and while the water bottle itself isn’t the most important thing, she is very upset at the reaction of both her brother and her mother. Now she is wondering if she truly is overreacting.

Personally, I think that it is obvious that she isn’t in the wrong here, but also that she needs to accept that it isn’t likely to change anything. Unless she is willing to end the relationship with her family, she will need to find a way to get over this. Read through the full story below and see what ou think.

AITAH for holding brother accountable for stealing my water bottle

Yes, this is the most champagne problem that ever existed but I feel like I’m losing my mind and need to know if I’m a terrible person or not.

No big deal; not every gift is loved.

I (18F) and my brother (19M) both received trendy water bottles from our aunt for christmas a year or two ago.

I liked the water bottle but ended up buying a new lid because i didn’t love the original colors. My brother flat out hated the color of his water bottle and straight up never used his.

Whether she uses it or not, he should not take it.

Fast forward to the beginning of this summer, my brother is leaving to be a summer camp counselor. Instead of taking his own water bottle, he takes mine. He also removed the stickers that I put on it because he didn’t like them.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t use the water bottle as much as I should have, but it was still decently being used, so I noticed when it disappeared but just thought it was in the dishwasher.

It isn’t that she cares about the water bottle. It is the principle.

I would also like to say, that if my brother would have just asked me to borrow it for the summer, I would have said yes. I still wouldn’t have wanted him to remove my stickers though, because now those stickers are long gone and wasted.

And I would have been fine with him dinging it up over the summer too, I understand things happen.

Mom is just trying to keep the peace.

I’m just annoyed by the fact that he didn’t ask. And when I texted him after I realized he took it, to politely tell him I knew he took it and to please bring it back on his next visit home, he called me names and proceeded to ignore me.

Now, my mom is mad because I’m causing trouble when she just wants to have a nice time with her boy. But I just don’t understand why he didn’t take his own or just ask me for mine?? And now my family is mad that im upset.

This is frustrating, but I doubt her brother will ever apologize.

On my brothers first visit home, to which he left my water bottle at camp, he laughed in my face after telling me that my water bottle has been repeatedly damaged and dinged up.

At this point, I just want for my brothers to admit what he did was wrong, and to be a mature person and just apologize for what he did. Because in the end I don’t really care about the water bottle, I care about the fact that he does whatever he wants and no one but me cares.

Mom is missing the point entirely.

When talking to my mom about this she said that I’m not going to get an apology from him and she’ll just buy me a new one.

But I don’t want a new one, I just want my brother, who is a full grown man, to own up to his actions, even if it is something stupid like a water bottle.

Her mom and brother are in the wrong here, but she might have to let this go.

Also it’s not normal to saying that I’m not going to “get an apology out of” someone?? He is a full grown adult and the fact that he can’t just simply apologize for something this simple shows his maturity.

Please let me know if I’m crazy or a terrible person, because I’m losing my mind.

There is no doubt that the brother and mother are in the wrong here, but she isn’t going to win the argument no matter what. Honestly, her reaction is likely what is making her brother want to keep it. Siblings can be cruel.

There is no doubt that her brother (and mother) are in the wrong, but they aren’t going to change. Her best bet is to just keep her belongings safe and secure away from them, and limit their ability to annoy her.

While the brother is technically an adult, he is clearly still very immature. Hopefully, he will grow up and stop doing this type of thing in the future.
