Yes, I understand that people take gender seriously…some much more than others.

And I can totally understand being annoyed if someone called you by the wrong gender.

But, at the end of the day, is it really that big of a deal?

AITA for accidentally misgendering a customer in my drive-thru?

“I’m 17 and the other employee I’m talking about is also 17.

I work at a McDonald’s and this happened at 10:20 at night. Both I and the other employee are male and appear fairly masculine, additionally we both have the exact same first name as it’s very common.

I was working in the back when this happened and I wasn’t the one who took this person’s order, nor was the other employee.

She comes through the drive thru to which I open the sliding window and ask “Good evening, sir, how are you doing tonight?”

It was an honest mistake.

It wasn’t good of me to assume her gender based off her appearance (red t shirt, short grey hair, no visible chest, heavier figure) but I’m trained to either say sir or ma’am and I guessed wrong with what I saw, late at night mind you when I’m half an hour over my shift.

She responds saying “Excuse me, Ma’am (very nasty tone, correctively not calling me ma’am)” after she said that I apologized profusely and said that I meant nothing by it, asked if she wanted to round up for the Ronald McDonald house charity (I’m required to ask).

Uh oh…

She said “Absolutely not” and I cashed her out, apologized and told her to have a good rest of her night, after I said that she demanded my name which I gave her and said I had really made her mad and I apologized again.

Yikes!

She pulled up the second window where she’d get her food to which my coworker says the exact same thing I did when greeting her which made her even more mad and he too apologized a lot, she demanded his name which he gave, assumedly making her mad more since his and my name are the same and she probably thought we were lying.

She called my manager over who also apologized after hearing about what happened, the lady demanded our GM’s name which my manager gave her, she proceeded to chew our manager out even more and said she was going to come in tomorrow morning to speak with our manager, and she said she’d sue me, my coworker, and the entire franchise.”
