As you grow up, it’s completely normal that you see less and less of your friends – so it’s not unusual to make an occasion of doing so. Perhaps in the past you usually just chilled at someone’s home with a drink or two – but now if you have partners and kids, that might be less of a viable option. So of course you might turn to going out for dinner or a movie, maybe the theatre on an evening when your partner takes care of the kids – because doing something for yourself, even if that is just hanging out with your friends for a few hours, deserves to feel a little special.

The woman in this story was happy to go out for dinner with her friends at a nice restaurant, and even offered to be the designated driver for the evening. And she was delighted when her meal arrived and the presentation was so beautiful that she wanted to take a photo before she ate the meal. But what happened next destroyed not only her food, but potentially some of her friendships too.

My girlfriends and I went a restaurant two days ago (I was the designated driver).

I ordered my meal and they ordered their meal.

I went to take a picture of my plate and before I could even take the picture, one of them used her fork and stirred up my food.

I got upset and asked her why she would do that and she told me it was “cringe” to take pictures of food.

I could tell the other girls were uncomfortable, but no one stood up for me. All I wanted was a damn pic because my plate was presented beautifully.

I got upset and just walked out the restaurant and drove home, leaving them behind. When I got home, I asked who paid for my meal and Zelled her the cost.

They started texting me and telling me that it was just a joke, what I did was immature and that it was wrong of me to leave them behind considering I was the driver. I do feel like I overreacted but I also feel like what she did was mean.

Honestly, the way that her friend acted was just mean.

Sure she might consider it ‘cringe’ to take a photo of food – so she doesn’t need to do so herself.

But preventing someone who she considers a friend from using her own free will to take a photo of something that made her happy is completely unfair – it’s no wonder the woman walked out.

Genuinely, her friends who didn’t stand up for her deserved her walking out on them almost as much as the girl who ruined her food did. Because that’s not how friendship works. It was beyond rude to mix up her meal to ruin the photo that she wanted to take – the girl was bullying her. Just because she might think that food photos are cringe doesn’t mean that others shouldn’t take them. This woman saw the transient beauty in her food and wanted to capture that beauty before she ate it. But the other woman robbed her of the opportunity to do that, and that really isn’t fair.

But the fact that the other girls did nothing to stand up to such abhorrent behaviour says everything. No one wants to think that their friends wouldn’t stand up for them if they are being treated poorly, but generally in life we don’t really get to find out. However this situation showed exactly where her friends stand in the face of bullying, and it wasn’t a pretty sight. Hopefully having to find their own way home taught them a lesson.
