When someone damages something that holds sentimental value, it’s hard not to feel frustrated, especially when they don’t seem to take responsibility.

What would you do if your partner borrowed your favorite item, ignored your request to be careful, and returned it with noticeable stains? Would you brush it off as an accident? Or would you ask them to help replace it?

In the following story, one boyfriend finds himself in this exact scenario with his girlfriend. Here’s what happened.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to help me replace the sweatshirt she ruined

So, some quick backstory: this is my favorite sweatshirt because it’s reminiscent of one of the first weekends my mom and I had a real, vulnerable, genuine conversation, and we resolved just our problems.

It’s special to me.

My girlfriend, like most, loves to steal my clothing, and this sweatshirt is her first favorite to wear.

I happily lent it to her and told her it was my favorite, so to be careful.

Last night she returned it with some pretty noticeable grease stains.

He thought the deal was fair, but she refused.

I understand that accidents happen and I asked her if she’d go halfsies next winter with me to replace it.

She just outright said so, that was a ridiculous ask, especially since I make more than enough money to replace it myself.

I told her that it wasn’t fair to have someone else damage my goods and have me replace them by myself. I felt halfsies was a fair compromise, we both have a role in it. Me for lending it knowing this was a possibility and for her staining it.

AITA?

Wow! She could’ve handled this way better.

Let’s see what advice the people over at Reddit have to give.

Here’s something for him to consider.
