Imagine having a tradition for how you spend the day after Thanksgiving. For many people, that may involve Black Friday shopping or eating leftovers, but for the man in this story, his tradition is going off-roading at a park.
The problem is that his manager insists that he has to work that day. Now, he’s stuck deciding whether to keep his tradition alive and risk losing his job or complying with his manager’s demands.
Keep reading to see how the story plays out.
Friday after Thanksgiving
Years ago there was a group of us in a local Jeep club that would go out of town 4 hours to an off-road park on Thanksgiving, go 4-wheeling Friday & Saturday & possibly Sunday before heading home.
I had done this for a couple years after I moved out of my parents and didn’t really care I wasn’t spending Thanksgiving with them.
I work in a construction industry and had told my coworkers about my trip. Told them I wouldn’t be there on site Friday because I was leaving for out of town.
Someone blabbed to the manager.
Our Field manager got word of this and complained that I didn’t give notice, and if I wasn’t there Friday I would be sitting come Monday. He wants 2 week notice before time off all of a sudden.
It was a total power move, and since I didn’t notify him specifically he was taking it out on me.
I was mad. But I came in to work Friday and a few of my coworkers even asked me why I was even there.
This got me more upset because I wasn’t needed, and I probably left early anyway and tried to get on the road when I could.
He wasn’t going to let this happen ever again!
Malicious Compliance time:
After I got back from my trip I was aggravated, but I couldn’t do anything about it except for the future.
I looked up a calendar online and noted the dates for the Friday after thanksgiving for the next ten years.
I hand wrote a letter stating I will not be available the following dates and listed Month, date & year for 10 consecutive lines, then signed my name at the bottom.
Put it in an envelope and dropped it off.
But it wasn’t even necessary.
I heard through the grapevine that he was mad about it, but I followed his directions.
He no longer works for the company, and as a whole, our company doesn’t even work the Friday after Thanksgiving anymore. It’s very rare & depends on the job.
I’ll be enjoying my day off tomorrow Smoking some spaghetti squash over 2 racks of ribs.
It seems weird they would be expected to work the day after Thanksgiving. Most people get that day off as a holiday unless they work retail.
