His Grandfather Cut Him Out of the Will—So Why Is His Dad Trying to Get It Changed?

You never really know what kinds of things are going to upset someone.
Something that one person believes is trivial is enough for another person to write a family member out of their will…
Literally!
That’s what’s going on in this story and the guy who wrote it is having some drama with his dad because of the actions his grandfather took.
Let’s take a look at what’s going on here…
AITA for snapping at my dad?
“My grandfather excluded me from his will.
He told me before he passed that he’s leaving me nothing because I’m gay.
He can’t accept that. He even tried to use it as leverage at one point, saying he’d still leave me money if I ‘stop being that’ but I told him it’s not something you can just stop being.
I already told my dad about this and that as upset I was at being disowned, especially for this reason, it is my grandfather’s right to choose who he wants to leave the inheritance to.
This is causing a lot of drama.
My dad is still arguing that it isn’t fair that my cousins all get something and that he is going to get a lawyer to challenge the will. He kept insisting that my grandfather probably regretted writing the will some time after writing it.
I snapped at him.
I don’t know why.
It’s like all the emotions I kept suppressed came bursting out at the same time.
He had a bit of a breakdown.
I told my dad that my grandfather left me nothing because he was ashamed of and no longer loved me, and that if I do get the money, I wouldn’t feel good using it anyway.
It would be a reminder in itself of the fact that he didn’t want me to have it because of who I am and that I could only have it through some sort of legal battle.
Also, I don’t want anything further to do with my aunt who like my late grandfather thinks it’s ‘unnatural’ to be gay.
Might as well just let her, my dad and cousins just receive their shares and get it over with.
My mom quickly told me I shouldn’t have snapped and that my dad was only trying to help.”

And another Reddit user weighed in.

Maybe he needs to lighten up and not get upset with his dad, but tell him calmly that he doesn’t want to escalate this situation.
I think that probably seems like the best way to go.
But I do feel sorry for him because of this whole dilemma.
His dad was only trying to help him out…
