Retail Service Fallout: Shopper Left Humiliated After Cashier Explodes Over Extra Plastic Bag

Sometimes, trying not to bother someone ends up causing a bigger problem.
One grocery shopper found that out after her mom noticed one of their bags was starting to rip.
Since the cashier was busy talking to another customer, she reached over and grabbed an extra bag herself.
However, the cashier immediately snapped at her and started making a scene in front of everyone.
Then, her mom jumped in, and the whole interaction got even more uncomfortable.

I got yelled at by a cashier for grabbing an extra bag
My mom (58F) and I (24F) were at a grocery store checking out together, and my mom noticed one of the bags was beginning to tear. She asked me to grab an extra plastic bag to place the ripped bag in.
Our cashier (probably around 60F) was busy talking to a customer behind us in line and scanning the rest of our items (and seemed to not be in a very friendly mood), so I reached for an extra bag myself so that I didn’t bug her.
She snapped the bag away from me and said, “If you only would have asked, then I could have helped you get a bag,” in a very sharp and loud tone—loud enough to get the attention of people around us.
The cashier finally handed over the bag.
I apologized profusely and admitted that I had overstepped in grabbing the bag myself instead of just waiting to ask her for one.
She would not let up and kept repeating how inappropriate and unacceptable it was for me to grab an extra bag myself and how that’s not how things work. She then held up the bag I originally reached for (that she snatched away) and said, “This is a LARGE bag. Is that even what you wanted??”
I was mortified and kept apologizing, but she was not having it.
Eventually, she gave me the extra bag, and she made comments like, “See how easy that was to ask, and then I could give it to you?”
Now, she’s left with a few questions.
She also said they were trying to conserve plastic bags for the environment or something.
Having my mom there definitely didn’t help because she can tend to match people’s energy, and those two began having a Karen-off in the checkout line. If I could have gone back in time, I would have just waited and asked her for a bag.
