I am a full grown adult, have kids, and a widow for 6 years now. I have my own apartment.

When I was left alone with my child, my apartment had plenty of space.

At the same time, my sister-in-law was left without a place to live. She needed something that would suit her. It had to be close to her work and allow basic freedom.

So, I let her move in with me. There was no charge, rent-free. She offered to pay the monthly bills in exchange. That was the deal.

This woman was stuck with her sister-in-law and her children.

What was not the deal was her kids.

They are already in their 20s and were raised totally different than I was. They do not believe in privacy. They like to meddle in every little thing.

So now, I am stuck with my sister-in-law, plus her children.

That would not bother me so much if they did not do this.

Her SIL’s daughter was being disrespectful to her friend.

I had a friend over. Just a normal male friend.

My daughter was home sitting in the same room with us.

We were chatting and having coffee. Then, one of the kids came home.

She started acting rude toward my friend. She even screamed that he must leave because he is male and I am female. She asked what the neighborhood would think.

I pointed out it is my apartment and my life and we were simply having coffee. There was nothing dramatic.

Now, she’s torn between having help in paying the bills and having her freedom.

Still, she kept yelling. She yelled so much that my friend was uncomfortable. He left.

My sister-in-law apologized for her daughter’s behavior.

But the daughter keeps causing scenes like that in my home.

So, am I missing something? Is she right or what? I am so confused.

I need them to pay my bills, but I need my freedom, too.

Yikes! This feels like a major overstep in someone else’s home.

OP was being kind to offer help to her SIL’s family, but it shouldn’t mean giving up control over her own space and personal life.
