It’s always awkward when someone you’re with starts taking their frustration out on an employee who’s just doing their job.

For one shopper, that’s exactly what happened when her mom got irritated that a cashier wouldn’t accept her rolls of coins.

The cashier did offer to call a manager over, but her mom snapped that the money was legal tender before paying with her debit card.

Once they left, she told her mom that the whole thing embarrassed her and that the cashier really didn’t do anything wrong.

Rather than let it go, her mom got defensive and later backed out of their plans for the evening.

I was out with my mum shopping for a few things.

We get to the till, and Mum tries to pay with coin rolls. The cashier says that she can’t accept them but could call a manager over.

Almost on a dime, Mum sort of snaps, “You should be able to accept this. It’s legal tender.”

As they were leaving, she tried to reason with her mom.

I can see the cashier tense up, and I’m feeling a little embarrassed by this whole thing, looking away, etc. I’m really not fond of confrontation.

Mum ends up paying with debit, and we leave.

At the doors, I tell her, “That wasn’t the cashier’s fault.”

Mum gets a bit defensive about it. I can’t remember all of the exchange, but at one point I said, “I’m a little embarrassed, to tell you the truth,” and she responds with, “Well, I’m sorry I embarrass you.”

Now, they’re not really speaking.

I kept silent for the drive home, and once there, she commented, “Are you gonna stay mad?” and I said, “Yes, I am a little annoyed right now.”

She made some remark about, “Well, we don’t have to go out together if I embarrass you,” which ticked me off further, and she said it was just a joke.

I told her to read the room, to which she went to her room to lie down and said she didn’t want to go to the movie we were going to see tonight anymore.

AITA?

Oh no! Family drama like that is never fun.
