Property lines might seem like a technicality, but disrespecting them can have some serious consequences.
One homeowner discovered a 30-foot stretch of gas line running across his property, installed by his neighbor for a BBQ setup, tucked away neatly enough that it wasn’t causing any visible problems.
When he brought it up, his neighbor pushed back hard, insisting everything was properly permitted and approved by both his inspector and gas fitter.
That confidence didn’t match what the actual property survey showed, which listed no gas line right of way anywhere near that spot.
Rather than escalating things directly, the homeowner covertly looped in the city inspector, setting the scene for an even more dramatic escalation.

AITAH for telling my neighbour his gas is on my property and informing the inspector?
I’m on a zero lot line, and my neighbour ran a 30ft stretch of gas line for his BBQ on my property side. It’s neatly tucked away and doesn’t affect me in any way.
The homeowner tried unsuccessfully to get ahead of this issue.
But I mentioned it to him, and he wasn’t happy and was saying he did everything right (permitted and pending inspection), and said his home inspector and gas fitter said it was ok.
Home builder sent me the survey, and no gas line right of way is supposed to be there.
The homeowner decided they weren’t going to wait around for solutions.
What he doesn’t know is I already alerted the city inspector.
AITAH for pushing the removal of the gas line?

This user shares their experience.

The neighbor claiming “I did everything right” doesn’t carry much weight when the official survey says something completely different.
Choosing to loop in the city instead of pushing the disagreement further shows more restraint than most people would manage in this situation.
A gas line on your own property, without documentation to back it up, isn’t something reasonable to just shrug off because it’s not currently causing problems.
Being a homeowner means making tough calls, and this was one of them.
