For many folks, a home is not a home without a pet. And that makes sense. Companion animals have lived alongside us for a long time, and if you grew up with pets always by your side, it’s likely the case that your home feels a bit empty without one.

So naturally plenty of people get pets early in their independent lives, regardless of whether that means they’re still with their parents, are living with friends or roommates, or are living on their own for the first time. Because the energy, comfort, enthusiasm, and loyalty of a pet? That can’t be rivalled.

The woman in this story has two dogs, both of whom came from a rescue centre, and her roommate is a dog lover too – and a dog owner herself. So naturally, she was comfortable leaving her dogs with this woman when she went away for the weekend. But what happened while she was gone might ruin her chances of trusting anyone with her pets again.

Am I overreacting for asking my roommate to move out after what they did to my dog?

My roommate is a dog trainer wannabe – she is very good at training dogs with the basics, and wants to become certified but has not registered for the course.

Her love for animals is undeniable, so when I had to go out of town for two nights and she offered to take care of my pups, I was extremely grateful for that. I shopped while I was away and bought her an outfit to say thank you.

My dogs are rescues and have a big issue with their nails being cut. They are legitimately scared.

I have spent a lot of time working on desensitizing them. I am able to cut my little pups nails one paw at a time but I’m lucky if I can do one nail at a time with my larger pup.

So naturally she never expected nail cuts to be a part of the arrangement.

My roommate is afraid to cut her own dog’s nails and I do them for her.

But when I came home, I noticed that my larger dog’s front nails were cut badly.

I asked if she had cut his nails and she said no because I know you don’t want anyone else touching his nails except you because you were trying to get him to trust you.

It was obvious that they had been done and I asked a couple more times and she still denied it.

Eventually though, she got the truth out of her roommate.

The other day, while we were chatting in the kitchen, I said that it was obvious my dog’s nails were cut, and she admitted that she had cut them but was afraid to tell me because she knew I was adamant that I was the only one to cut them because I was working hard on trust and desensitization.

I was angry but I asked how she managed to get both front paws done, and she said she gave him a large dose of CBD oil. She drugged my dog without my consent and I just can’t get over that.

Her reaction to me was that she will stay away from my dogs from now on, with absolutely no accountability for her actions.

Am I overreacting by asking her to leave?

Let’s be clear: she trusted her roommate to care for her dogs while she was away, knowing how much of an animal lover her roommate was. She had no reason not to trust her.

But the sheer quantity of lies and gaslighting since she returned home is crazy, especially given how obvious the nail cut was.

To then find out that the dog was drugged to do it? It’s no wonder this woman was livid.

If you can’t trust your roommate around your pets, then you can’t trust your roommate. Because there’s no questioning the fact that they’re going to be around your pets plenty, and many times when you’re not around. It’s not worth the anxiety – or your pet’s safety – to keep the roommate around. There are plenty of lovely folk out there who would be fantastic with your pets – respectful and kind to them – so why stick with someone who has proven that, despite perhaps having good intentions, they can’t be trusted?

Maybe the roommate was practicing a technique or trying to learn something new for her career as a dog trainer. That’s admirable, but experimenting on another person’s pet without their permission absolutely is not. Because our pets can’t necessarily consent for themselves, meaning that their owners have the duty of care to do that on their behalf. Consequently, this dog owner would never agree to having her pet drugged, so the roommate doing so without consent is, honestly, unforgivable.
