Sharing a hostel room requires everyone to have some basic consideration for each other.
The following story involves a man whose roommates repeatedly played loud music and disrupted his sleep and studies.
Their schedules were completely different, with his roommates sometimes studying late at night and leaving the main light on.
Despite politely asking them to be more considerate, nothing has changed.
Now, he’s torn between involving hostel authorities and just letting it go.

Roommates keep playing loud music while I study or sleep. What should I do?
I’m an MSc student living in a hostel, and I’m having a really frustrating problem with my roommates.
They frequently play loud music in the room whenever they want, including when I’m studying or trying to sleep.
I’ve already asked them several times to keep the volume down, but they either ignore me or don’t take it seriously.
This man and his roommates have different schedules.
The bigger problem is that we have completely different schedules. They may not study much during the day.
But when I’m ready to sleep, they sometimes start studying and switching on the main room light.
I understand that they need to study too, and I’m willing to adjust.
But I feel like there needs to be some basic consideration in a shared room.
He wanted them to be more considerate.
I’m not asking them to completely stop listening to music or stop studying at night.
I just want them to understand that they’re sharing the room with someone else.
If I’m sleeping, loud music shouldn’t be playing.
If they need to study late at night, I feel they should use a desk lamp or find some other way, rather than keeping the whole room lit.
He tried to ask them politely, but nothing has changed.
I’ve tried being polite and talking to them, but it hasn’t really worked.
I’m also from another state and relatively new here.
So I’m worried that complaining to the hostel authorities might make things worse or make me look like I’m creating problems.
Honestly, this is affecting my sleep, concentration, and studies quite badly, and I’m getting really stressed about it.
Now, he’s unsure what to do with the situation.
What would you guys do in this situation?
Should I keep trying to talk to them, set some clear room rules, or involve the hostel warden if they continue?
I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have dealt with difficult roommates in college/hostel.
Sharing a room with other people is already challenging.
But having roommates ignore basic courtesy and respect makes things much harder.

Honestly, OP shouldn’t have to choose between getting enough sleep and avoiding conflict with his roommates.
Setting clear room rules together sounds like a good next step. What do you think?
Let’s find out what others have to say about this.
This one shares what they do.

This person has a question.

Finally, another one chimes in.

Roommates don’t have to share the same schedule, but they should at least share the same level of respect.
