I Got Fired from My Dream Job While I Was in the Middle of a Trip. What Do I Do Now?
“I’m on vacation after working 6 days a week for the last 5 months.
I needed this break so badly.
He was about to get a rude awakening…
And suddenly I got an email titled: Employment Update. I opened it, and my heart dropped.
I got fired. By email. A few days into my 10-day vacation.
I called my manager immediately, hoping there was no way this was real.
Spoiler: it was real. She told me this was their corporate-ish way of “getting the truth out of people.”
This seems unfair.
But I wasn’t lying about anything.
She didn’t believe me, and it didn’t seem like she looked into the matter properly, and she still sent a termination email while I was out of town.
Here’s what happened beforehand: weeks ago, I took a shift that wasn’t originally mine. As I was leaving, I realized I hadn’t clocked in. Usually, I would message my coworker to fix it, but this time I logged in from the work laptop and adjusted the time myself.
It was an honest mistake.
The next morning, my manager texted me asking how I changed it.
I told her honestly – I was the one who did it.
She asked me a few questions afterward, but honestly, I didn’t think I had done anything shady. I worked the hours, so I adjusted the punch. And I figured that if she was genuinely concerned, we would talk face to face instead of handling it over texts.
About 8 days later, while I was in another state trying to enjoy my trip, I saw that she had changed all the business passwords. That alone made me anxious before I even saw the email.
Ugh.
Then I opened my inbox and found it: fired.
I called her immediately because I was falling apart.
Thankfully, she answered.
I was barely keeping my voice steady, and I basically asked her: “What happened? Why are you firing me?”
She took the opportunity to explain.
She said the way I changed the time made her unable to trust me anymore.
Apparently, she believed I had signed out of my account to log into someone else’s account.
I explained to her that I used my phone and the company laptop, and that the laptop automatically opened my coworker’s account instead of mine without me realizing it.
After I explained, her voice sounded like she understood. She even said something like: “Okay, that makes sense. I still want you to work with me for a long time.” So for a second, I thought the whole thing was resolved.
These people sound a bit sketchy.
Then – about 45 minutes later – she called me again. This time she said she had spoken to her husband, who is also a co-owner, and he still wanted me gone. She said her hands were tied, told me I would “be fine wherever I go,” and offered to be a reference for me.
Lovely, right?
The worst part is that for 5 months I had been making $16 an hour while doing way more than the front desk role I was hired for. I was handling marketing, Instagram content, local partnerships, and events, on top of the normal front desk work.
No raise, no title change, nothing. They kept saying we would talk about pay when I got back from the trip, and I actually believed that. Now I feel like they were never planning to bring it up in the first place.
She’s pretty confused.
What confuses me the most is that I had never received a written warning or been told there was a problem at this job.
It was all praise. And that gave me a false sense that I was valued, which is probably why I kept accepting such a low rate and taking on more work.
Now I’m sitting here questioning everything.
