Apartment living comes with an unspoken agreement about reasonable noise levels, but one man’s new neighbor seemed to miss the memo.

Since moving in, this neighbor had left their front door open around the clock, meaning every sound from their home, kitchen noise, conversations, and a toddler’s predictable multi-hour crying sessions carried directly into the shared courtyard space.

After a week and a half of this becoming a near-constant background presence, the exhaustion had clearly set in, along with crippling uncertainty about the best way to address it.

Neighbor leave front door open 24/7

So I live in an apartment that has 3 other apartments across from us (like 2 metres away). There is this one neighbor who recently moved in and leaves their front door open 24/7, I kid you not.

This isn’t even the worst of it, though.

It gets worse, they have a baby who I assume is around 2-3 years old who has yelling or crying periods that last 2-3 hours in the morning from 8am to around 11am, then I assume they put the kid to sleep.

It then happens again around 6-8pm in the afternoon, and it is just incredibly exhausting to hear every day.

Every other noise seems to be amplified too.

Not to mention we can also hear them moving stuff like pots and pans and their conversations.

Any advice would be appreciated. This has been going on for about 1 and a half weeks.

Pretty obvious, should I tell them to close their freaking door?

Why not make the complaint based on something less personal?

Simply asking the neighbor to close the door isn’t weird or dramatic, it’s one of the most normal requests possible in apartment living.

Something low-stakes like “hey the sound really carries when your door’s open, mind closing it?” would probably do the trick without making it too awkward.

New parents do deserve some slack, but at a certain point, the noise gets just plain excessive.
