When a stranger bangs on your door, ignoring them can feel like the safest possible answer, especially when you’re home alone.

One woman had followed that instinct after hearing an unexpected knock while she was cooking, only to experience something much more frightening a few days later.

A person, whom she assumed was a neighbor of some kind, pounded heavily on the door and shouted for her to open it while she was alone inside.

The situation briefly stopped when another neighbor called out from nearby, but nobody could explain why the man had shown up in the first place.

Her roommates were just as confused, leaving her with nothing except an increasingly uncomfortable question about who was coming to the house.

Soon she was forced to put a plan into action to keep her and her roommates safe.

Neighbor keeps banging on our door

About a week ago I was in my kitchen cooking and heard a knock on the door. I wasn’t expecting anyone and I was home alone, so I opted to not answer.

That wasn’t the end of it, though.

A few days later I was in my room when I heard what sounded like a knock, but it’s really hard to hear knocking or the doorbell from my room, especially if the TV is on.

I ignore it.

That’s when things began to escalate.

Then I hear heavy banging and a man yell, “Open the ******* door.”

Once again I was home alone and I’m a woman, so I obviously wasn’t going to open the door.

Another neighbor seemed to intervene, which seemed to put an end to it.

Another woman’s voice chimed in and asked, “What’s going on,” and the man didn’t respond (or at least I couldn’t hear a response), and then the banging stopped.

I texted my roommates asking if they knew anything I didn’t, but they were both clueless.

The tenant tried to get on with her life.

Cut to tonight, I get home from work and it was stressful, so I went and got myself a pizza and some wine and came home.

I happened to pull in same time as my neighbor, but she didn’t say anything to me, so I just went inside and went to my room.

But soon the disruption returned.

It’s 8 at night and I sit down to enjoy my pizza, and then the banging starts again. This time it continues for about 5 minutes. I tried to look out my window without being noticed, but I didn’t see anyone leave.

Now she isn’t sure what to do next.

I keep considering calling 911, but the person leaves too fast. They never leave a note, and I work an odd schedule, so it’s not like I’m home every day. It seems like at this point they’re looking for my car to determine if I’m home.

She strategizes the next move with her roommates.

Discussed it with my roommates, and we’re looking into getting a camera for our house.

We have most of our neighbors’ numbers, so if they genuinely had a problem, I feel like they would just text or call. Not sure what our next step should be, we don’t know who it is, they aren’t leaving a note, and they just keep coming back for some reason.

Sister said I can’t file a police report since I don’t know who is doing it. Any ideas?

Before anything else, the tenants need to know what this person looks like.

Maybe calling 911 while the banging is happening is the best course of action.

A security camera would probably do a lot of good.

Given what she knew, treading with caution was probably the smartest move she could make.

Nobody should feel obligated to open their door for an unknown person, particularly when that person has clearly escalated their behavior.

If the visitor had a legitimate reason to be there, they’d leave a note or contact her through another means.

One thing is for sure: Normal neighbors don’t behave this way.
