In 2000, Jessica got caught in a flood and was washed away from her mother. Tonie and Shirley Joubert discovered the baby hippo who still had her umbilical cord attached. They decided to rescue and take care of Jessica, who became ‘imprinted’ to the couple, forming a lifelong bond.
