If your job includes repairing the belongings of customers, you have to be honest about what your skills are.
Because no one wants to accidentally mess up something that a customer values.
In this story, a worker talked about what happened when they told a customer they couldn’t fix his watch because they didn’t want to damage it.
Check out what went down.
I don’t think customers realize I don’t care if they get upset.
“I work in a large department store. I frequently work at the jewelry counter.
Now, we will adjust watches and change batteries, but only for watches we carry. If we damage something, we can easily refund them or give them another one.
We are not professionals (we hire people with zero experience) and if someone brings in a watch worth 3k, our small store is going to go out of business if our associates break them.
They have strict rules about this!
We are told to never work on watches we don’t sell, and if we choose to break the policy and then we damage a customer’s property, WE have to refund them out of OUR own pocket.
Our policy clearly states you should always refuse if you don’t feel comfortable working on watches we don’t sell.
And when I’ve done it in the past, I’ve gotten yelled at by management, so I don’t do it, period. I’m not getting sued, I’m broke.
Every customer is the same.
“What do you mean you won’t!?” (that’s what I just said, Karen.)
That was proved to be A LIE.
“I had it done here before!” (liar, liar!)
“Come on, I don’t care if you break it!” (you are telling me you wouldn’t wouldn’t sue me for breaking your watch that costs a fortune? Liar.)
I had a special kind of jerk the other day.
Man: I need a battery
Me: I can’t do a battery for a watch that we don’t carry.
He instantly goes from a 2 to an 11.
Things were about to get wild!
Man: Every time I come in here, YOU PEOPLE have some different excuse for why you won’t do it!!! I had it done here before, real quick and easy, unlike all you other people!
Me: Uh…cool I guess? I’m still not going to do it.
Man: I need a battery, NOW!
Me: Our policy states-
Man: I don’t care about your policy, I want a battery!
Me: I can ask-
Man: THEN ASK THEM, ALREADY! Instead of sitting there!
I call a coworker over and ask her if she would do it. She gently picks at it for about a minute before she hands it back to him.
Coworker: I can’t do this one, you are going to have to take it to a professional jeweler.
Man: Fine. I should have not even bothered.
The entitlement of some people astounds me. Looking back, I regret being so nice. I should have just said, “can’t help you, good day.””
Let’s take a look at how readers reacted.
This person spoke up.

Another individual had a lot to say.

And this individual weighed in.

This customer needed a serious attitude adjustment.
