Having a disability can make many things more difficult, especially in the workplace.

What would you do if your boss was giving you a hard time and even threatening to fire you because of your performance?

That is what was happening to the young lady in this story, and after a meeting with HR, she was sent home and isn’t sure if she was fired or not.

AITAH for possibly getting fired

I (27f) have been working at my job for about two years now.  To give a little context about the situation and who I am as a person.

I’m sure this is relevant to the story.

I have a couple disabilities I have ADHD, GAD, a learning disability and Insomnia. I have had all of these since I was 3 years old.

Over the years, i’ve been put on medications to help with these conditions, and I have had therapy. (I’m still going to therapy to this day, however im no longer taking medication for any of these conditions anymore, due to me wanting my body to take a break).

This is a great job.

I am a licensed Pharmacy Technician. I have been a licensed Pharmacy Technician for 5 years now. 2 years ago I got my job working for a health system. (I’m not gonna name the health system for security purposes).

I worked in a warehouse at the same company for 1 year and then recently I switched positions/ departments to a sit-down job (my current role) and I have been doing that for 1 year now.

Having a job you love that pays well is a real blessing.

I love this job, I love the people I work with, and it pays good money.

I struggle with somethings. For example:

Being forgetful is a challenge, but you can overcome it.

There’s alot of things that I have to remember and memory is a huge issue for me.

I also have to switch between different tasks constantly and if I get pulled to do something else while im in the middle of doing something, I have to remember where I left off and then come back to it. Which is also a struggle for me.

She can do it, I’m sure.

As far as the job goes, there’s a lot of tasks that I have to do. And within these tasks are different directions on how to do them

For example if a patient is needing a certain medication. There’s different directions on how to fill different medication. There’s a lot of services that we provide as well. Overall it’s a very stressful and complicated job.

Is the job worth all the hard work?

It requires a lot of attention, multitasking, memory, and math. I have struggled a lot in this position, I have had training twice on how to do my role.

The first time around I wasn’t grasping anything. But the second time around, I was successful, and was able to move on into the role.

Getting proper training is essential for success.

Normally, once you are done training, you are given 2 to 3 weeks on a team alone, but someone is able to check over your work.

I, however, only got not even one week (feb 2nd to feb 5th). I had someone look over my work. But then she left a couple of days after I started.

Great, she is figuring things out.

I was struggling a lot after being on my own for a while, but I eventually got the hang of things.

I asked for help when I needed help. And I took a lot of notes.

Let’s see what happened.

Around february 8th is when I started getting pulled into the office, my manager would question me about why I did stuff a certain way.

She would critique every little bit of detail. I was getting pulled into the office almost every single day for a lot of different things, some things that were beyond crazy.

Well, that is what the patient wanted.

For example, I was doing a patient’s order. And this patient wanted to get less medication, my boss pulled me into the office and asked me why I sent less.

And then I explained to her why. One time my pharmacist wanted me to send more, and I got pulled into the office and questioned why I sent more.

Once a manager thinks you’re doing poorly, they pay attention to every little thing.

I’ll admit there were some things that I did struggle on that I didn’t do correctly, however, I was also getting pulled into the office and questioned about why I did something a certain way or how I got the correct answer.

I was questioned by not only my boss, but the coordinator.

My coordinator, who can’t even do her own job correctly, would pull me into the office constantly as well, there was one time when she pulled me in, and she asked me ten different questions.

This seems excessive.

She questioned me on the things that I got right saying I know you got this right and sent the right medication. But I just want to know how you got the right answer.

My brain would constantly freeze because I would have to think back to what my process was.

Constant criticism makes things hard.

Getting pulled into the office every single day had a huge effect on my work. Because I had to stop what I was doing, go to the office, and then come back and remember where I left off.

Eventually, it was to the point where I was behind and my boss kept questioning why I was behind on my work.

They are trying to get rid of her, it seems.

I eventually got written up twice for performance. (Basically not improving in my job). My coordinator would constantly text me asking me questions on how I did something, and why I did it.

I had a group chat with my boss and my coordinator and both of them would ask questions in the group chat.

A union can be very helpful with this.

When I got written up the last time, I have a union rep with me. (She is also my coworker) My union rep, and my boss both agreed that my union rep would also help me. My coordinator was not in this meeting.

I went back to my role and continue to do things as normal with the help of my coworker, things were starting to go good, until my coworker was off one day.

What is happening now?

My coordinator pulled me into her office and questioned me on something that I did and asked me how I got the answer. I had mentioned to her that my coworker helped me with that one, and my coordinator questioned why she was helping me at all.

I didn’t know how to respond, so I just told her that the boss knew about it. She proceeded to say, well, she shouldn’t be.

I hope she is looking for a different job.

Most recently, I got pulled into a meeting with HR and went to the DRC stage where they basically tell you if you are going to continue to work or not.

In the meeting my boss had mentioned that there were 3 things that I still needed to improve on. I told her I understand and I’m working very hard to improve on those things ( which I am).

Hopefully, they will be accommodating.

I told both her and HR that I have disabilities that make it challenging for me to do the job. But I am working very hard to find ways to make my job easier.

The hr person asked if my boss knew about my disability and my boss lied to her and told her that she had no idea.

Good job standing up for herself.

I stopped my boss mid-sentence and I stated. Yes, you do in fact know that I have a disability.

I’ve told you multiple times and I have even told my last boss all of this, because he as well has a disability and that is something that we both could relate on.

That could be a good resource.

The meeting before the hr meeting my boss had given me a phone number to call if I had a disability and I needed assistance.

I also brought that up during the meeting and told her that I called the phone number and it was not in fact a hotline for disability. It was for therapy.

The boss is deceptive.

My boss acted like she didn’t even know about the phone number and stated that she never wrote up anything to give me.

The HR person had asked if anyone from ADA had contacted me to go over accommodations. I have had it stated that no nothing has ever been brought up about accommodations.

I’m not sure if this is true or not.

To my knowledge if an employer knows about an employee’s disability, they have to call ADA and set up accommodations.

That was not done from neither one of my bosses. (This all happened two Fridays ago) after the meeting they sent me home and told me to wait for a call.

Let’s see what the results of all this were.

Flash forwarding to today. Since that last meeting, HR reached out to ADA and we are now in the process of accommodations. But they have not told me if I we’ll be continuing to work there.

I have requested from HR to possibly transfer back to my old position, simply because I do not want to be under my boss anymore.

If they didn’t fire her, she needs to get back to work.

I have been at home waiting for hr to call me.

AITA?

It isn’t clear why she thinks she may have been fired. It really looks like the HR team is trying to work with her to find a way she can be successful.

Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about this.

She is making a lot of excuses according to this person.
