A Neighbor Left a Note Telling Them Not to Park There—But the Street Was Public

Jeez, talk about being passive-aggressive… We’ve all dabbled in it during our lives, but this is a bit much…

And maybe also a bit unnecessary. But, like we’ve said before, parking issues tend to get people all kinds of fired up!

WIBTAH if I confronted my neighbor about her made-up street parking rules?

“I live in a big American city, but a smaller, quieter neighborhood within that city.

This neighborhood has a lot of old, small single-family homes, and about 25-50% of them do not have driveways. Street parking is not hard to find as it’s a pretty quiet spot.

My house has a driveway that fits a single car, and we have our second car parked on the street right in front of our house. If someone took that spot while the second car was gone, that is their prerogative as it is free, first-come, first-served parking.

I’ve even had Zip cars parked in front of our house that aren’t moved until someone else rents it. Annoying, maybe, but totally within the bounds of what is fine as it is street parking, open to any car.

Hmmm…

Our friend came over for 2 hours tonight, and upon her exit found a note on her car saying: “Please park at the house you are visiting so that my neighbor and I can park in front of our houses.”

Am I ridiculous for thinking this is way out of line?

And would I be wrong if I confronted my neighbor about it?

We have already taken the spot in front of our house, there’s no room for someone to “park at our place.”

Street parking is fair game and I don’t see why my friends should have to adjust totally normal behavior on the whims of some woman.

She is elderly, but very able-bodied and constantly going on walks, gardening, washing her car, etc. The most she would ever have to walk is like a quarter of a block.

My thought is that homes without a driveway or garage are less valuable for a reason, and she should have thought about this being a concern for her when she bought her house; she has no ownership of that spot.
