Loud neighbors can be really annoying, but you also can’t expect people to be silent all the time.

What would you do if your new neighbors were building a home near you, and they had to run a very loud generator throughout the day until electricity was hooked up?

That is what the family in this story is dealing with, and they are looking for things that they can do to get it to stop because it is stressing them out.

Personally, I think they need to start by talking to their new neighbors. It is unlikely that they are intentionally causing the issues, and they will likely be willing to do things to at least mitigate the problem. Read through the full story for yourself and see what you think.

New neighbor in rural TN location, running huge, loud generator for 12 – 14 hours a day….

When we bought our home in 2020, we had a several-acre cow pasture across the small road beside us.

It is always upsetting when the look of the area you live in begins to change.

This past year, the owner of the home & pasture, divided and sold their properties. The new owner is building a new home on the prior cow pasture, and he’s also built a shop.

He’s also added an eyesore of a semi-trailer cargo unit (blue w/large trucking verbiage) in front of his shop, has added a tiny-home storage unit, and has many large trucks (dump trucks, etc.), a small RV that the new owner’s family is currently living in, and additional large equipment, all on the property beside us.

Sometimes it takes a while to get power fully hooked up to a new home.

They have built a new home on the top of the hill beside us, yet the home has no electric power wired to it currently.

They have added electricity from the power company (2 power poles on the left side of some of the acreage of this property); yet their home is on the right side of the property.

Annoying, for sure. At least it isn’t running at night, though.

They have been running a generator daily, for 12 – 14 hours of the day, depending upon how hot the day is, starting around 9 am, then shutting it off between 7 – 9 pm.

This huge generator has no soundbox or muffler and the noise is extremely loud and annoying all day. They have ruined our peaceful neighborhood, yet we are in a small rural East TN area that doesn’t appear to have any noise/nuisance ordinance posted on our County government website.

Have they tried to talk to them about it?

The owner is building the home himself, so it could be months before it’s completed, as he mainly works on weekends, doing small things to the unfinished home.

What would you do about this neighbor disrupting the peace & quiet? The state government website shows a nuisance ordinance, yet states that normally the specific county handles these types of complaints.

There is no doubt that this would be annoying.

We can hear the generator while we are inside our home, trying to talk to each other or watch TV, and definitely can’t enjoy sitting on our screened in porch for coffee and conversation, lunch, friends & family get-togethers, etc.

Yet, we still have to let our dogs out many times during the day. We can no longer even hear the birds singing & chirping around our home.

Calming down is an important first step.

We love our home and the peace and quiet we once enjoyed…. I’ve been so upset and angry about this, that I’ve refrained from going over and confronting them, until I calm down a bit.

Any suggestions on how you might approach this issue?

If they haven’t talked to the neighbors yet, then that is the obvious first step. It is very possible that they would be more than happy to put up some soundproofing or sound-redirecting items near the generator to mitigate the issue.
