Her Stepsister Has No Friends of Her Own, So She’s Always Tagging Along—And Now She Needs a Break

Dealing with siblings is tough.

Even on the best of days, there’s typically some kind of underlying issue that make a person want to reach across the table and smack some sense into their brother or sister.

Hey, it’s just the way it goes!

In today’s story, a woman opened up about why she’s having a real dilemma when it comes to her stepsister…and this doesn’t sound good, folks!

Take a look at what she had to say about this situation.

WIBTA If I told my stepsister that I didn’t want to hang out with her?

“I’m (19, Female) and every since I was 5 I’ve had the same group of friends.

I’ve lost a few over the years but as of right now I have two main close friends S (19, Female) and T (20, Male). We all went to a very small school together and were in the same grade. To put it in perspective my graduating class was 2024.

Now the issue I mentioned in the title.

My stepsister E (20, Female), who I’ve known since I was also 5, and I are very close. But we are also very different in many ways, different humor, different styles, etc.

When we were 14, she had a falling out with her friend group, her friends ditched her and completely ghosted her. So I felt bad, and invited her to sit with my friend group, it was awkward at first, but eventually it became normal for her to sit with us.

For the rest of high school she had no other friends besides my friend group. Then she graduated a year before us, and that was it.

Now all of us are graduated and every hangout my sister has come along.

I never saw it as an issue, none of my friends said anything, like I said were all friends, nothing wrong right? Well recently, me, S, and T, had an opportunity to hang out (which is rare nowadays because we all work) but E had to work, so she couldn’t go.

That’s weird…

I told my sister sorry that she wasn’t able to go and she sent me a text: “You see the bad side of me is thinking I hope you guys can’t go but the part that wants to he nicer is hoping you guys get to hang out. I’m trying to decide which side’s winning”.

After reading the text it kinda rubbed me the wrong way, mad me mad but I went about my day normally.

Finally the hangout day comes around and me, S, and T are all talking and we get on the subject of E.

The truth finally came out…

They told me how they was glad she didn’t come and confessed that they only really hangout with her because she’s my sister, otherwise they don’t find her humor very funny, they all have different personalities and that if she tried to hang out alone with them they’d say no.

Then I showed them the text and they got upset on my behalf saying she should be happy for us, and that if say S and me, we able to hang out but T couldn’t go, he be happy for us, not petty. We went about the rest of our day, and it was probably the best time I’ve had in a while.

It made me realized that I spend a lot of time with my sister, every day off we hang out, and don’t get me wrong I love my sister.

She needs a break.

But I miss being with MY friends, being away from family and just being myself. My sisters feelings can be very sensitive so I feel sometimes I’m walking on eggshells not to hurt her feelings.

And I don’t want to be mean and say ‘well they were my friends first’. But how do I go about saying I want to hang out with my friends without my sister there, without hurting her feelings.

Especially if the hangout day is on a day where she is free? She has no other friends and is kinda socially awkward.”

I’d say she needs to have an open and honest talk with her, but be respectful about it.

No name calling, no yelling, no screaming.

Hey, the truth can hurt sometimes, but it’s usually the best way to handle things.

It sounds like she needs to take a break from hanging out with her stepsister…
