Man Was Smoking Near an Oxygen Tank—Then Got Angry When a Parent Asked Him to Stop

Smoking around an oxygen tank seems like a pretty obvious safety concern.
One parent ran into that while trying to enjoy some time with his child at a recreation center.
He noticed a man smoking near the pool while holding an oxygen tank.
So, he walked over and politely asked if the man could move away from it.
Instead, the man got angry and told him to call the police.

AITAH for asking a man smoking next to the pool with an oxygen tank to maybe not do that?
I was just trying to enjoy some time with my kid.
This guy was smoking right by the front door to the rec center, oxygen tank right in his hand, looking through the fence toward the outdoor pool.
His tiny toddler was peeing himself in shame on the concrete by the fence, on my side. Apparently, he couldn’t be bothered to take the kid to the bathroom and just told him to pee in his swim shorts.
She tried to be polite, but he didn’t want to hear it.
I walked over, saw the screaming toddler, and was shocked at what I was gathering was happening.
He said, “He’s mine,” as I had my head on a swivel trying to figure out whose kid this was. I said, “Oh, okay. Well, anyway, I know you’re trying to enjoy yourself and everything, but would you mind maybe not smoking right next to your oxygen tank?”
How dare I. He was “20 feet” from the building. Call the cops, he says. I muttered something about him blowing up the whole building. He curses me out, and I just walked away.
AITA?
Wow! That does seem like a dangerous thing to do.
Let’s see what the people over at Reddit think.
Not sure how true this is.

That’s a valid point.

That’s really sad.

This reader suggests calling 911.

He wasn’t wrong for saying something.
Smoking next to an oxygen tank can be dangerous, and that’s not something everyone around him should have to ignore.
Still, once the guy got aggressive, walking away was probably the smartest move.
At that point, he’d said what needed to be said, and there was no reason to turn it into a bigger confrontation.
