Organizing a potluck is supposed to be the low-key version of hosting, but this one still managed to generate a 9 PM argument the night before.

A host who had coordinated a week’s worth of planning and dish assignments got a last-minute cancellation from an unreliable friend who had agreed to bring a single item he hadn’t even prepared yet.

The worst part was that the friend wanted everything pushed back because of a work deadline that had existed for a long time and been left until the worst possible moment.

The host said no and offered a late arrival instead, but still got called “unaccommodating,” along with a few other unsavory expletives.

Before long, the friend was off the guest list altogether.

AITA for not postponing my potluck?

I (M) am hosting a potluck with my friends that has been in the works for the past week.

Everyone decided on making two to three dishes each, while my friend “A” was only going to bring one dish — garlic bread — which we convinced him to make after a lot of effort.

Today, a day before the potluck, some of my friends had already prepared their dishes.

But soon came a change in the plans.

“A” decided to tell us at 9:00 PM that he was busy tomorrow and asked us to postpone the potluck.

When we asked him why, he said he was busy with some work that had been due for a very long time, but he chose to do it on the day of the potluck.

He tells A that postponing at this juncture would be totally inconsiderate.

I told him that multiple people had already prepared their dishes, and if we postponed to the day after tomorrow, they were likely to go bad.

My friends and I suggested that he could come at whatever time he found convenient, however late it may be.

A now lashes out at everyone.

Instead, he called us unaccommodating and followed it with a slew of expletives.

I told him to either come late or not come at all.

He continued to hurl expletives at me.

AITA for not postponing my potluck?

Sounds like A is officially off the guest list for any future gatherings.

What did Reddit think?

This user agrees A shouldn’t be invited around anymore.

This commenter can’t believe someone would behave this way over a simple potluck.

Some people seem to need to be reminded that the world doesn’t revolve around them.

Most people understand the social contract around potlucks. You prepare and bring a dish for others, so you can then enjoy the food everyone else brought.

This friend seemed to think he could upstage an entire get-together just because he didn’t have his house in order. That’s not how it works, and this host was right to push back.

This friend could have gracefully accepted defeat, but instead he pushed even further and ruined the entire friendship.

At the end of the day, this friend only proved why he should have never been on the guest list in the first place.
