Special occasions don’t always have to be shared.

This woman planned a special birthday trip for her daughter with her husband. However, her ex and his wife became upset that the younger half-sister was not included in the plans. The situation quickly turned into a much bigger family conflict.

This is one of those family situations where expectations and boundaries can easily clash. Read the full story below. It’s a relatable story because conflict in blended families is real and quite common nowadays.

AITAH For Not Taking My Daughters Step Sister to a Theme Park?

My daughter (11F) is the daughter of my now ex (32M) who is married and has another daughter (7F).

I am also now married. My husband and I bought my daughter a year pass to a well known Australian theme park (it’s technically 4 theme parks).

Her birthday came and I told her we’d plan it for August.

My husband and I booked motel and gave her dad the dates for when we’re away so they didn’t interfere with his custody.

This woman was accused of being horrible for not including her ex’s daughter.

This evening when I got home, I received a terrible voicemail from my ex.

He was saying that my husband and I are horrible people for not taking his daughter (the stepsister) to Dreamworld with us.

That I was separating siblings and ruining memories. His wife called me after I replied via text.

She said I was being “thoughtless” and that “Sometimes, David and I would like a weekend to ourselves, but you and Kurt only think about yourselves.”

She explained that it was a birthday treat for her daughter.

I was calm. I explained and said this was a birthday treat for my daughter.

But if she and her husband would chip in for the motel and the 2 days of tickets for the park, then we’d gladly take her.

She hung up and said I was being unreasonable and selfish.

Then, they made a huge post social media about it, with her mother saying horrible things about me.

And saying that children’s services should investigate me for parental alienation or something along those lines.

Now, she feels bad because the two girls are close, but she wanted quality time with her daughter.

Literally, a whole comment section of me and my husband’s names being rubbed in the mud.

I can’t be the jerk here. I’m so close to just cancelling and going another time when I know they’re busy.

I feel guilty ’cause those two girls are great together.

But I want quality time and memories with my daughter and husband. AITAH?

I don’t think OP is wrong for wanting a special trip with her daughter. In fact, she was actually thoughtful for offering to take the younger sister along if her ex and his wife would cover her ticket and accommodation. The social media backlash seems particularly unnecessary and only made an already awkward situation worse.
