I’ve asked this question before and it looks like it’s time to ask it again…

Why do people get pets when they know they’re not going to have the time or the energy to take care of them properly?

It drives me crazy!

But we keep seeing stories like this one over and over again..

AITA for reporting my roommate and requesting a room transfer?

“I (18F) just started my first semester of college. I am going to a state school near my hometown, but too far to commute.

I chose to live in an apartment complex where I would have 3 roommates but with my own bedroom and bathroom.

This is where my roommate, B (21F) comes into play.

This apartment complex was advertised as pet-free and that no pets were allowed so I was surprised to get a text message 3 days before moving in from one of my roommates asking if we like cats.

Our apartment as a whole has 4 cats, B having 3 of them.

Fast forward to move in day.

Uh oh…

There was an odd smell in our common areas in the apartment but subtle enough not to be a problem.

I moved in all my stuff that day, Friday. I left to go home on Saturday because school didn’t start for another week.

I came back on Wednesday to hang out with friends and just stay at the apartment until school started.

When I got back to my apartment, it smelled horrible. I cannot stress it enough how bad it smelled in there. I showed my friends my room that day and they could not stand to be in the common areas.

This is so gross…

Turns out, B goes on work trips a lot and just so happened to get back recently after have been gone for a week. During that week, she left her cats in her room without asking or paying anyone to change their litter.

When she came home, she leaves her door open during the day which causes the smell from her room to come into the common areas.

I texted our roommate group chat and asked someone to take care of the smell in the apartment as I talked to one other roommate about it and she didn’t like the smell either.

B never responded.

I texted her directly Saturday asking her to please clean up after the cats as it smells. She responded saying that she works 9 am- midnight and that the litter she got was bad but never said she would clean or help the smell.

Sunday morning, I went into the kitchen to make breakfast when my boyfriend said he might have found the root of the smell. There was cat poop in the corner of the living room. He picked it up only for me to find another pile a little later behind the TV.

She’s over it!

That was my last straw and I marched over to the management front desk and told them the situation.

They urged me to fill out a roommate conflict form which I did as well as a transfer request. The conflict form is anonymous but she will obviously know it’s from me.

The transfer request will not go through for another 2 weeks but I’m afraid that B will get notice of the conflict form and might get charged a fine for breaking the contract about pets.

I’m scared that she will confront me about it but I just want to live in a clean and smell-free apartment for my first time out of my parents’ house.
