Living in an apartment with thin walls can make ordinary sounds feel much louder than expected.
The following story involves a woman who had just moved into her first student studio apartment.
But her downstairs neighbor constantly banged on the wall whenever she made even tiny noises.
Because she lived alone, she became increasingly nervous whenever he banged on her wall.

I’m scared of my downstairs neighbor
I’ve just moved into my first student studio apartment.
The walls here are really, really thin.
Obviously, on moving day, my mom and I made quite a bit of noise carrying all the bags upstairs.
We were trying to fit everything into the ridiculously tiny staircase.
This woman would almost always hear banging on the walls from her neighbor.
Ever since I moved in, every time I make a noise, even a tiny one, my downstairs neighbor bangs on the wall.
I open my fridge, which admittedly is pretty loud.
I open my windows, drop something, walk across the creaky wooden floor, or make the slightest bit of noise.
And I’m almost certain I’ll hear one or several bangs coming from the wall.
She initially thought it was always her to blame, but she realized later that the issue was really her neighbor.
For context, I grew up in an environment where I became a little paranoid about making noise, and I already tend to be scared of disturbing people.
So at first I thought, “Okay, maybe it really is me.” But no.
Honestly, there’s no question about it.
Every tiny noise, even something as simple as opening a door, seems to result in him banging on the walls.
And I’m scared.
Now she’s scared for her safety and comfort.
I’m a woman. I live alone My apartment door isn’t particularly sturdy.
And the fact that he already bangs on the walls makes me worry about what could happen if he ever decided to confront me directly.
I was hoping I’d run into him during the day so I could talk to him nicely and maybe clear things up.
But honestly, I’m really nervous about it.
I’m waiting to meet him and talk to him before bringing it up with my landlord.
But even then, I don’t really know what my landlord could actually do.
Honestly, the constant banging from the neighbor sounds incredibly stressful.
OP was already trying to be considerate, but small noises are inevitable.
I can truly understand why she is feeling scared and uncomfortable.
Perhaps involving the landlord may be a good option if she doesn’t feel safe around the neighbor.

A little noise shouldn’t have to make someone afraid in their own home.
