She Put All Of Their Utility Bills In Her Own Name, But She Realized Quickly That Was A Big Mistake

A bad roommate situation can turn simply living into a daily endurance test. Sometimes the biggest luxury isn’t the nicest apartment on the block- it’s a roommate who can functionally co-exist with others.

What would you do if you wound up with a roommate who was both dirty and late on payments? One woman recently aired her grievances about her situation on Reddit. Here’s what she said.

AITA for cutting off utilities after my roommate refused to pay me back

I lived with a roommate for about a year after finding her through an online roommate search.

I worked full-time while she was a student.

Right from move-in there were issues.

These two are in completely different phases in their lives.

I had told her I couldn’t coordinate much on weekdays because I worked in-office, but she still chose a weekday move-in date.

On move-in day she kept calling me at work because she didn’t have enough money for her share of the first month’s rent and deposit.

I ended up covering nearly $2000 for her with the understanding she’d pay me back later.

That is a very messy way to start things off.

Since she didn’t have the documents needed to open utility accounts, the WiFi, gas, and electricity were all under my name.

Every month I paid everything upfront and she reimbursed me later.

At first it was mostly fine, but over time her payments became late and inconsistent.

This was the writing on the wall.

I’d also get reminder emails about unpaid WiFi bills because the account was under my name.

There were other roommate issues too.

She often left the kitchen messy despite cooking far more than I did, but still wanted to split cleaning equally.

Ain’t that just the way…

She once let a friend stay overnight without asking me first and only informed me the day the friend arrived.

Her friends would also come over late on weekdays and be loud even after I explained I needed sleep because I worked early mornings.

Seems like communication wasn’t either of their strong suit.

To be fair, she wasn’t terrible all the time.

She helped me once after I injured myself badly in the kitchen, and I appreciated it.

Things got worse after I lost my job.

That would dump unnecessary fuel on the fire.

I told her months in advance that I wouldn’t renew the lease.

Eventually she found someone to renew the lease.

Before moving out, I repeatedly reminded her to transfer the utilities out of my name because I would soon be leaving the country and couldn’t manage accounts remotely.

A classic mistake that many make.

She kept saying she would but never did.

I moved out completely before the lease ended, and once the lease officially ended, she STILL owed me around $2200 in unpaid rent/utilities and earlier money I had fronted for her.

Despite me no longer living there or being on the lease, the utilities were still tied to my name.

Surely there were steps that could have been taken there?

When I asked her to settle the money and transfer the utilities, she claimed she was holding my money “in case something in the apartment was damaged,” even though we already had a security deposit for that.

I explained my situation and asked her to pay me by the end of the week.

She called me inconsiderate and said she’d pay me later.

Was there ever a time these two got along?

She still didn’t pay.

At that point, since the utility accounts were legally under my name and I was about to leave the country, I contacted the companies and disconnected the services.

Only then did she finally send me the money she owed me.

Disappointing, but not surprising.

After that she sent angry messages, called me names, blocked me everywhere, and told me never to contact her again.

I know I should’ve set firmer boundaries earlier instead of letting resentment build up.

But AITA for disconnecting utilities that were still under my name after my lease had already ended and she still owed me money?

If what the OP is saying is true, this case feels pretty cut and dry. Let’s see if the Reddit jury agreed.

The comments all seemed fairly annoyed by the whole affair.

Most were put off by the roommate’s behavior.

One is moving out, but the other won’t move on.
